Steve

Hi Doug, you need to correct your typo in your response to the 4th question. I am sure you mean Oden and not Odom as the player for the Blazers. :)

Blogger's note: Got it, thanks.

ET

Doug, howcome you can't reveal stumpy's real name on your blog?

Blogger's note: CSIS concerns.

Chris

Top 5 coaches to take your team to the promiseland and you pick 3 who've never been there? No Phil Jackson?

And Andrea is untouchable? Is this because BC doesn't want to admit his mistake? It can't be because they actually viw him as an impact player on a championship level team.

Dave B

Doug, I'm very surprised you list of coaches includes Stan Van Gundy instead of Phil Jackson!! How can you go against 9 rings? Regardless of superstars, the zen-master gotta be doing something right!

bballer

doug, why would the raps draft a big man in the first round when they already have bosh and bargnani. they can easily get a bunch of young bigs in the second round or from other teams. guys like o'bryant who will be chandler lite with playing time, simmons who is 2 years away from being solid, diop, eton thomas who will recover well from surgery, shawne williams from nj, shawn williams from indy or even sean may.

drafting a big in the first round is almost admitting that you don't have faith in your current bigs. a young athletic wing that will be the future of your franchise is needed now. yes you can pick up maggette but another will be needed. this draft will have 2-3 immediate impact players. rush, cdr and a few other young guys in this draft will shine over the next 2-3 years like jefferson, josh howard and dunleavy did.

Justin

Doug won't Garbo be playing in Beijing? If so that should get him nice and warmed up before the NBA season gets underway.

Blogger's note: If he's still with the Raptors, he's not going to Beijing, Bryan told us the day after the season ended.

MD

So Calderon comes out and says he wants to be the starter. Does that make him 'selfish' too?....I'm just saying.

Chris Paul is ridiculously talented. That fake he made on Duncan in the fourth quarter last night?...WOW

Zack

I think Stumpy is Steve Buffery, he is bald and short so he fits the criteria. Now who the hell is B. Arthur or Frick and Frack?

DougG

Doug if the Raptors are talking about taking a big in the draft, when there are so many good looking small forwards available, does that lead you to believe they already have a line on a veteran small forward?

Blogger's note: I don't know if they have "a line" on anyone, it's pretty early in the off-season, but I also think there are more 2s and 3s available in trades than there are young bigs to groom for when Rasho's done.

Chris Clarke

"Top 5 coaches to take your team to the promiseland and you pick 3 who've never been there? No Phil Jackson?"

+10,000

Come on, Doug. Justify leaving Phil Jackson off that list, or admit you forgot about him. For a guy with 9 championship rings, he really has flown under the radar in LA (now that's a sentence that has never been spoken or printed before).

Blogger's note: If it's developing talent from a not-so-good team to one that's very good, I'm not sure he's the guy. If you've got good talent and are close, he may be the best; to start from relative scratch and build, I don't know.

Grumpy fan

If I was to hazard a guess, I would say Stumpy = Steve Buffery

Serge Papineau

I think the Raps are stuck between a rock and a hard place with their point guard situation. I honnestly believe that Calderon played above his head in a contract year this season and that his play will regress a little (think end of regular season and playoffs) next year. I'm not saying that he "played harder" in a contract season, it just seems to happen alot in the NBA. TJ on the other hand has very little trade value and probably has the potential to be the better of the two, however, whether he ever gets there, especially in Toronto, is the big question. So do you basically give up on TJ and trade him for 40 cents on the dollar or do you gamble that he will stay (fairly) healthy and end up getting a nice piece for Calderon.

Also, now that Calderon has come out, pretty much the same way TJ did, and said he doesn't want to sit on the bench it will be interesting to see how the fans and media treat him. I'm guessing he gets nowhere near the same level of hate that TJ got. Funny how that works....

Greg Carmichael

Stumpy IS Steve Buffery (can't believe how many people don't know this if they are sports fans). One of Frick & Frack refers to Michael Grange at the Globe & Mail (who has an excellent blog of his own). Can't figure out who Mitchell would be giving the remaining name to but it is obviosly one of the remaining beat writers. You guys really should read more than just one paper to get more than one opinion on everything.

Eric

Doug,

You might not like this but it can't be swept under the rug. Now that the Calderon/Ford thing has led even yourself to concede that one of them must be moved, is it not time for some membership of the media to apologize to those fans who were concerned about this situation from the start? All those fans heard back in the day were media and team reps telling them that they had no basis for worry or complaint, that it was "the team's greatest strength" and anyone who didn't see that was simply an unqualified basketball observer (not in so many words!).

As fans, we get enough abuse reminding us of how we were wrong on certain issues. Maybe it's come time to also admit when we (though not me in this case) were RIGHT?

Blogger's note: No, no apologies necessary and none coming; a year ago, it worked great, today it doesn't; things change. And some of us have been suggesting or a few months that a move would have to be made.

Dinosty

Bynum's done for the season, it was reported last week.

No matter though, 'cause the Lake Show's gonna be in Boston either way.

"Also, now that Calderon has come out, pretty much the same way TJ did, and said he doesn't want to sit on the bench it will be interesting to see how the fans and media treat him. I'm guessing he gets nowhere near the same level of hate that TJ got. Funny how that works"

Serge, the only flaw in your argument is that the situation is completely different. What Jose is doing doesnt impact anyone immediately. At this moment, he isnt sulking and his attitude isnt causing poor play that is costing the team games. If he comes back, gets relegated to second string and starts whining/playing selfishly and the media cuts him some slack then your argument will be a lot stronger.

Having said that, I would have to agree with you that getting a nice piece for Calderon might be the way to go. If TJ has it in his head that he runs the team, I think his play as a pass first PG will get better. Maybe not as good as Jose but as they say, you have to give up someting if you want to get something. (unless you're mitch Kupchick)

TC Woodley

I remember the first time Jose came on the floor as a Raptor. I remember it well because I was on a break at work; he had a big enough impact in that sequence that I was late coming back from my break. Telling all my co-workers that this guy was the future of the Raptors.
In other words I've been a Jose fan since day one. At the end of the first season he was asked what he would be doing over the summer. Jose said he would work on his shooting. He came back and his shooting was better. That's the kind of player who is a winner.
He's been over-looked and under-estimated. We've seen his capacity for sacrifice and his spirit in overcoming language barriers. He's worked for respect and the paycheque he will be offered. And also the number one position. I think it's about time he stood up and asked for something in return.

Doug S,

Do you live in Peterborough? Seems to be a lot of answers to questions from Doug S and was wondering if that was your way of filling up space, you know Doug S = weak pseudonym? Or maybe you just like to talk to yourself...

Gord Lester

Doug left Phil off his list of coaches because the Zenmaster is already in the promised land, which is both everywhere and nowhere.

ET

As for "Greg Carmichael" comments:
I think most of the raptor fans do read more than one newspaper and they do know the names of the sportswriters in Toronto. I personally was curious why D.Smith never reveals the true identities.

Lazaros

"After all, the likes of Barbosa, Diaw and Bell are athletic enough that if they wanted to, they could be okay defenders."

Bell could be "okay" defender? He was NBA All-Defensive First Team in 2006-2007.

Dan Waechter

Doug, I disagree with you on the apology for the Ford/Calderon issue. Most people realized at the time that it was working at that time, but a lot of fans were worried that it could not continue to work for a long period of time, which it did not. Those fans turned out to be dead right, yet were almost always dismissed. If you wanted to dismiss someone at the time for saying it wasn't working, that's fair, but to do it to those who were questioning whether it could work for an extended period of 3+ years was IMO uncalled for.

Also, if Paul is responsible for 90% of the Hornets success and they finished just one game shy of the Lakers, does that mean you believe Kobe was responsible for around 90% of the Lakers success? I’ve just never heard your explanation for voting Kobe and would be interested to hear it(My apologies if you did lay it out in detail). But what are your exact criterion, and how did Kobe meet them better than Paul/Garnett/LeBron?

Andre

"Blogger's note: No, no apologies necessary and none coming; a year ago, it worked great, today it doesn't; things change. And some of us have been suggesting or a few months that a move would have to be made."

Yes Doug, we are all aware that things do indeed change. However, isn't it part of your job to forecast some of these changes? What's frustrating is that you blast us casual fans as being ignorant when we suggest that there may be a problem with the TJ/Jose relationship in the future, yet when our predictions come to pass you simply brush us off and refuse to own up to your short sightedness.

Furthermore, it's not like this was your only mistake either. You also predicted that Moon would make no significant impact, that the Raptors would win the Atlantic and that Boston would be a .500 team. With such a poor track record your attitude is still that of arrogance as if you could not be wrong and anyone who doesn't agree with you is either stupid or blind. Have you ever predicted anything correctly Doug?

Nigel

Man the Raptors are gonna put a bullet in my head if they draft another Big instead of getting Douglas-Roberts or Brandon Rush!!! GAHHHHHH!!!

Those two guys are going to be absolute steals in the draft. The only reasons they are out of the top 10 is because of the same trivial issues that made Josh Howard and Arenas fall so low.

Dav

Clearly Kenneth has never played any competitive sports. Swearing is an excellent way to vent frustration, specifically if it's within the context of the game. But I'm sure if enough complaints arise David Stern will have the players wearing shock-collars in no time.
