Doug Smith has been a sportswriter for more than 30 years, a journey that's included seven Olympic Games, numerous and varied championships and more dreary regular season games than he'd care to remember. Here, he'll talk about them all, as well as current events and pop culture. (Just don’t ask him about music nowadays — it's not his cup of tea).
Hi Doug:
I was one of those guys a few weeks ago who thought Bargnani could go in a deal if it meant Toronto could bring back some real toughness. We still lack that toughness and I don't think we can win anything significant without it. Even so, it is fun watching Bargnani develop.
Back before Christmas, when Bargnani was struggling, you'd see his name added to the "worst number one pick of all time" list on some blogs, along with Kwame Brown, etc. I went back and looked at that list and I defy anyone playing GM--not knowing what we know now--to have chosen anyone other than Bargnani at number one:
1. Bargnani
2. Lamarcus Aldridge
3. Adam Morrison
4. Tyrus Thomas
5. Shelden Williams
6. Brandon Roy
7. Randy Foye
8. Rudy Gay
9. Patrick O'Bryant
10. Saer Sene
Roy has become a better player than most expected, but every draft is arguably going to have a 6'6"--6'7" SG/SF that will do well in this league. You can make a case for Aldridge, but even then he didn't have Bargnani's upside. And look--we ended up with the number 9 selection anyway.
Second guessing is like eating and breathing for sports fans, but it's pretty hard to quibble with BC's choice in '06. It's looking better and better with each game.

That was wildly entertaining!
Every time I go to the game I like to come back on here and scroll through your thoughts. So thanks. it's a great read.
