More in a minute but a trade is done

Just a quick heads-up while I write the quick story but the Raptors have made a trade, league sources tell me.

Jason Kapono's gone to the Philaelphia 76ers for Reggie Evans.

Now, off to figure the financial repercussions; will be back with a story in a little bit.

I agree with the other posters, Kapono's offence did not make up for his turnovers and weak D. Assuming Evans is with the team next year, will he eat up the limited minutes that Hump was due when Bosh is on the bench or would he ger some minutes at Center/ PF with Bosh? I'm just confused as to where he will fit in the rotation.

Blogger's note: As a backup big, you can see a four-man bigs rotation of Bosh, Bargnani, Humphries and Evans possibly

Is there any real reason behind the oft quoted, "players don't want to play in Toronto." It's a way cooler city than most NBA cities. (Fav city in the world, Barcelona, now that's a city!)

great thing about BC is that he's not afraid to fix his own mistakes. He saw that his Kapono signing hasn't worked out after 2 years and went out and made the necessary changes as soon as he could.

Thank you BC!!! It's good to trade JK. Good luck to JK. It's really bad to watch he travelled most of the time though.

I think this is a move to make room for Delfino. I rather have Delfino or AP instead of JK.

Also I think BC properly will pick a wing in the draft too.

Anyway, this is a good move.

Chris, if that's true, let's resign Joey and bring in Stephen on a partial guarantee...

Doug, any luck figuring out how much cap space this leaves the Raptors with, assuming they don't bring Douby and O'Bryant back? Also, if they've only got the mid-level exception, does Delfino count against that?

Blogger's note: No one -- even Bryan -- knows for sure until the cap numbers are released in early July and when they decide who, if anyone, they renounce. Check the morning, it'll have more.

Really love this trade Doug...

How big of a part you expect Evan to play? Is Pops gone now?

Tyreke and Reggie Evans are brothers?

And for the record: (in order of ability)
Expected PGs: Jose, Roko, Banks
Expected Swingmen: Delfino, AP, Douby, #9 Draft Pick
And a glutton of bigs.

This is speculation and there will likely be more trades before the start of the season.

We our left with a clear gap in the 3 position.

So, with that said, who are the 3 most likely candidates to fill our 3 spot? (Is Marion #1?)

And also, taking his inconsistancies (sp?) into account, is Delfino ready to start in the NBA?

Good move BC, it'll be nice to have a guy who can come in for a starter at the end of quarter's and NOT give up 3 straight offensive rebounds.

I know that this has nothing to do with today's transaction, but any word on a possible return of Delfino? I know that Kapono wasnt shooting all that much, but now that he is gone, we need another one, and Delfino had a nice touch when he was on.. Thoughts, Doug? And if i missed this information in previous blogs, my apologies,

Blogger's note: Delfino is still very much in their plans if they can make the money work. More in the morning

And we are also considering bringing Rasho back? We better trade away some of our bigs... also bring Delfino and let AP leave

kudos to colangelo for taking a dig at kapono and calling him a finesse player

Come on this is a good start people, add some grit to the front court. We do not need Kapono, we need toughness.

And Doug if you had a choice, wouldnt you rather high energy guy like Pops, than a me first Hump?

Blogger's note: Humphries can do more, he's bigger and he's younger. That's a no-brainer to me.

This New York Times article would suggest that his brother is not the same Reggie Evans:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/21/sports/ncaabasketball/21preps.html

"...Reggie Evans, 35, manager of a communications company and Tyreke’s legal guardian."

I like the trade, but God, wouldn't it suck if Jason suddenly decided to shoot more and refind his stroke?

Can we have a bit on what Evans brings to the table? Is he a 8th-12th man on an 8-man rotation? What does he do for us (other than the financial benefits)?

Blogger's note: Grit. And I'll get into it a lot more in the morning.

I also like the deal. But perspective is always interesting. Almost 100% approval of the trade by the Sixers fans based on their reaction to the Philadelphia Inquirer article. They love Kapono's offense and aren't the least bit concerned about giving up Evans...in fact many are incredulous that they were able to unload him! I guess this really could be a rare case of each team benefiting equally from a trade.

It can now be said that the bigs next year will be Bargnani, Bosh, Rasho, Evans and Jawai. Hump may be on his way out in another packaged deal, especially since his contract does not have many more years on it and comes at around $3mil/yr (Doug, you can state exact numbers).

I still think BC should find a way to move up in the draft and pluck away Stephen Curry, be it by trading picks beforehand or by doing a draft-night deal including more players. We desparately need that combo-guard lethal shooter.

it's not his brother.

People corrected the writer in the comments to that story.

He's apparently Tyreke's guardian:

“He carried that ball like Linus carried his blanket on Charlie Brown,” said Reggie Evans, 35, manager of a communications company and Tyreke’s legal guardian

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/21/sports/ncaabasketball/21preps.html?pagewanted=all

What are the possibilities we never see Reggie in a Raps jersey? Could you foresee Colangelo shipping him off in a multiple player deal or simply moving him again to create even more cap space?

Blogger's note: He's not going anywhere.

I think the value in this trade is if Evans will demand some toughness from the other players, a Oak type of influence. If yes, a great trade. If no, status quo.

as a person who is not a big bc fan, i find this trade quite intriguing. adding evans and possibly keeping marion would change the team culture around rebounding. we actually have guys who have the knack to grab boards instead of trying to develop a system to maximize efforts. raptor practices should be tougher.

draft night will give a stronger indication on the development of a refreshed culture for the team.

I have to admit I was surprised, but the more I look at stats and think back to games Reggie Evans played in, this is an amazing deal for the Raps. I remember watching Evans in Seattle thinking how good he would be in a Raps uni., but then again I did the same watching Bucks games and seeing T.J. Ford...

I am hoping this means dead weight like O'Bryant and Pops are out the door...

Great reply Doug to the absolutely ridiculous post above.

Hate to nitpick but the reggie evans that just got traded to the raptors was born in 1980 making him 28-29 not 35. Not that Reggie is an uncommon name among african americans an Evans is pretty common as well.
