Four years on Jarrett Jack offer sheet

It didn’t take Bryan Colangelo long at all to make his next free agent move.

The Raptors president and general manager will, if he hasn’t already, extend a four-year contract offer sheet to free agent guard Jarrett Jack.

There’s no financial terms available right now but Jack made $2.2 million last season with the Indiana Pacers and it’s unlikely the Raptors wouldn’t make an offer that at least includes a marginal raise in the first year.

The four years is the interesting point. Colangelo said he was looking mainly at short-term contracts to avoid future tax penalties but if the salary is low enough, he must feel comfortable that it won’t have any long-term implications.

Jack, a college teammate of Chris Bosh at Georgia Tech, averaged 13.1 points and 4.4 assists per game with the Pacers last year, when he started 53 of 82 games, beating out former Raptor T.J. Ford for the starting role.

At 6'3, he’s also more than able to play a little two-guard and would be the kind of combo guard Colangelo likes.

Because the 25-year-old Jack is a restricted free agent, the Pacers will have seven days from the time the offer sheet is signed to decide whether or not they’ll match it. Team officials there have given no public indication before today what they would do in the event of an offer to Jack but have said they want to avoid any chance at crossing the tax threshold of $69.9 million.

These players are great!!!

Bryan is a genius if he can some how trade D.George and A.Wright and some how get L.Keliza or B.Nacbar

love the move. how could you not?

if we have jack it makes our biggest weakness 3rd big-a whole we can easily fill as there is plenty of FA talent available

any thoughts on the GTech connection? did bosh and jack ever play together at school?

Blogger's note: Teammates for a year

I think Brian is going to make a play on wade next year....

Another great move.

BC's having a good summer.

Assuming Jack ends up in Toronto. Would the addition of Delfino and Rasho, mean an end to this flurry of action?

Blogger's note: God, I hope so :)

I am reall digging these moves Bryan is doing this year, WOW what a hard working GM, this must be one of the best moves for the Raptors bring BC in.

I love this move. Jack (combo guard) was not really on my radar. Glad he was on BC's.

If he get him, knowng BC is not done, Im likely to start pining for an end to this sunny summer weather for the dreariness of October.

Hopefully BC can keep us entertained for the next 7 days.

Let God help Colangelo once again. Jarett Jack and Roko Ukic are simply not same class of player. Jack is just average player. Not that he doesn’t belong to NBA league, but there’s zillion players of Jack’s quality, especially at PG. While Roko is predestined to be good starter one day. OK, if he’s patient and willing to learn, like for example … Calderon was. I can see no good reason for overpaying career backup instead of trying to develop Roko. To compare border-line all-star Calderon with Jarett Jack is absurd. What fight for the minutes, Jack was not even able to beat Steve Blake for starting job (ask Nate McMillan if You don't trust me). As of Pacers, TJ Ford beat Jack for the job, not the other way around, Jack was nailed to bench until TJ (traditionally) got hurt along Dunleavy (and later Marquise Daniels got injured too). Speaking of Pacers, most of their last season's games finished like 120-115 or so, therefore all players stats are kind of inflated ( for similar example see: Shawn Marion stats in Suns period compared with his later career ) .

God already helped Colangelo with Shawn Marion turning down (for him insane good) contract offered by Brian. Then struck by a light Turkoglu changed his heart at 5 minutes to 12 leaving Pritchard empty handed. And if now Bird matches that Jack offer … well, then we’re talking about really lucky man. Bird just might do it, he had not many flashes of brilliance as GM (in fact he had none, but let’s show some respect to one of the greatest players in the history of the game).

"On another note for anybody interested in seeing a short interview of Demar DeRozan at summer league:

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-42-58/DeMar-DeRozan--Arriving-Early.html"

Nice interview but.....

"Are you getting used to the cold?"?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!

It's summer, even in Canada, you moron! What an idiot.

A little sophmoric but, that's the best post title evah!

I wonder if Bosh would now consider signing an extension this summer. I know he said he wouldn't, but after the moves BC has made, as well as the projections for next years salary cap/tax level.. I would personally consider it now after all that! Go into the season with one less headache (the continuing summer of 2010 talk). I understand the other side of the coin....but I do wonder if Bosh is now thinking differently than he was a few weeks ago.

I also wonder if the Wade/Riley stuff is something Bosh thinks about, like how here is another BIG free agent(wade) for next summer and his GM (Riley) who won't do anything until the Free agent signs. All the while Bosh has a GM who will do everything and anything to make his team better every chance he gets.

Any idea what they plan on doing with Banks?

for anyone that wants to watch any of the Vegas summer league games just go to this site,www.p2p4u.net/...they show every game, i just am watchin Curry play, Warriors-Kings, he's a sweet ball player anyway they show all the games...some need to watch it as it is not a "league" it is bad officiating, selfish play and really can't see the benefit of letting a player play in it actually...

What about Pops Mensah Bonsu will he be coming back

Blogger's note: 5-95; maybe 3-97

Chris Bosh was on Ustream last night. He said like 10 times that Jarrett Jack was his boy during the live show. Guess he knew last night that this was coming.

Man, it just keeps getting better. J Jack would be a dynamite add. Good ball handler, holds his own on D. And the guy is a cool, clutch shooter: "assassin" comes to mind when I think of J Jack. Load'em up, BC!

well the way I see it the Pacers have literally boxed themselves into a corner and that's how BC may see it as well ...they have Dunleavy on the hook for big money, he is untradeable due to his injury and he is over-valued..., they also have been trying to dump Tinsley forever as he is due over 7 mill, I am sure they want to get rid of T.J. but really he is over-paid and a player option I think to declare for free-agency next year which he won't...so they are stuck with him and then they made the cardinal of all sins I feel in signing a back-up Jones who would have been there a month from now and that gives them like 5 guards....and the starter at the end of the year was Jack, Morway has a mess there, he's boxed in both by contracts and his lack of forsight in signing Jones so early...so Jack may end up a Raptor unless they can dump Tinsley's contract...

hey doug, are your sources saying the chances of pops returning are slim or is that your own prediction? i have no idea why the raptors would let him go, he is worth a roster spot for the minimum or less than $1 million... even the spurs got him in last season on a 10 day contract....

Blogger's note: No source I've ever spoken to since the day after the regular season ended has ever once suggested the Pops would be back. Of course, things can always change, as we've seen, but, seriously, right now he is NOT ON THEIR RADAR. AT ALL.

Hi Doug,

At today's summer league game Brian Colangelo mentioned that he had to renounce Delfino, but as interest was mutual there was a chance he'd still be a Rap.

If BC wanted Delfino, why would he renounce him?

Blogger's note: Bookkeeping to do the Turkoglu thing

Haha yeah man I completely agree with you, that was such a dumb question. I know summer league play means nothing, but DeRozan had 20 pts today on 20 shots for whomever might care, and honestly I don't think anybody should care, I was just that bored so I looked.

So Doug, if the Raps sign Jack, Rasho, and Delfino, dont you think they would need to sign another big man? They would have Bosh, Bargs, Evans, Rasho, and Patrick. Patrick would most likely be inactive so doesnt that leave a big man spot open for the 12th player on the active roster assuming that Banks and George would be unactive?

Blogger's note: If they sign those three -- and it's entirely possible -- they will have 15 guaranteed contacts and -- finally -- be done.

hey doug.. i was hoping the raps would be able to sign kleiza with part of the MLE(5.5-6mil).. im guessing jacks price tag would be atleast in the 3-4 mil range which would prob leave only 2 mil(not enough to lure kleiza im sure).. im assuming they would use the biannual exception to sign rasho and also resign carlos.. would there be any way they could add klieza too.. sign and trade maybe.. if not.. then what other potential free agents out there can the raps target? daniels? pavlovic?(if he gets bought out) barnes? your thoughts please..

Blogger's note: Kleiza's Plan B if the Pacers match. And if they do, it'll be in a week and we'll see who's available then.

I heard D.Wade was checking out condos on the lake, asking about leases for late 2010.

Doug, I was just wondering, if in fact the Pacers do match Toronto's offer for Jack, does that mean that he has to go back to Indiana just because he's a restricted free agent and he still half-belongs to them? Or does he simply have to allow them to match an offer for him before waving goodbye? I think he would rather come here than stay there, right? (Maybe?) The Pacers really don't look like their going anywhere anytime soon, and the Raptors have definately improved. He would be a great addition to the backcourt, seeing how he's a combo-guard. I see us (the Raptors) finishing 4th this coming season behind Cleveland, Boston and Orlando. Maybe even 3rd, I'm not entirely sold on the Magic yet. I think Vince might ruin some of the chemistry there.

Blogger's note: If the Pacers match, he's a Pacer

Silvio, you kind of lose your argument when you say that Jack and Ukic are not the same class of player, and that Ukic is a higher class. Have you actually ever watched Jarrett Jack play? Ukic might possibly one day become a good starter, but that very much up in the air and at least a couple of years away. Right now, Jack is head and shoulders better than Ukic. Jack would be a rotation player for just about any team in the league. While he might never become a great PG, but he would most definitely be one of the better third guards in the league. He's an excellent defender, can score in a variety of ways, including from outside, and is a very steady ball handler and passer.

Ukic has shown FLASHES of good play, intermixed with bad decision making and inconsistent play. He's a low percentage shooter, especially from outside and is actually is an average passer, right now. Yes, he could show improvement like Calderon did, but Calderon also had a much better rookie season. I'd say the jury is still definitely out on this .380 shooter who had real trouble finding consistent minutes despite a dearth of backup PGs.

Oh, and Jack actually started 3 more games last year than T.J. Ford, who only missed 8 games. Ford lost his starting position not because of injury, but because because Jack and Ford were actually starting together until Brandon Rush was moved into the starting lineup in place of Ford. so both Ford AND Rush beat out Ford for the starting position.
