Four years on Jarrett Jack offer sheet
It didn’t take Bryan Colangelo long at all to make his next free agent move.
The Raptors president and general manager will, if he hasn’t already, extend a four-year contract offer sheet to free agent guard Jarrett Jack.
There’s no financial terms available right now but Jack made $2.2 million last season with the Indiana Pacers and it’s unlikely the Raptors wouldn’t make an offer that at least includes a marginal raise in the first year.
The four years is the interesting point. Colangelo said he was looking mainly at short-term contracts to avoid future tax penalties but if the salary is low enough, he must feel comfortable that it won’t have any long-term implications.
Jack, a college teammate of Chris Bosh at Georgia Tech, averaged 13.1 points and 4.4 assists per game with the Pacers last year, when he started 53 of 82 games, beating out former Raptor T.J. Ford for the starting role.
At 6'3, he’s also more than able to play a little two-guard and would be the kind of combo guard Colangelo likes.
Because the 25-year-old Jack is a restricted free agent, the Pacers will have seven days from the time the offer sheet is signed to decide whether or not they’ll match it. Team officials there have given no public indication before today what they would do in the event of an offer to Jack but have said they want to avoid any chance at crossing the tax threshold of $69.9 million.

to Silvio or whatever your name is as I never took the time to read it properly..get your facts straight, Jack did in fact beat out T.J. for the starting spot and T.j. threw one of his tantrums and stewed about it, created problems just as he did with the Raps...T.J. is so predictable he is passive-agressive and his words don't match his actions...he says I am fine and me and Jack/Calderon get along fine but then his actions totally contravene those words, he has a inflated view of his self-worth...so Silvio you are dead wrong about Jack/T.J..as you are about how Jack is thought of by other g.m's around the league...Jack and Roko are not even comaparable, I like Roko but really Jack is now what the raps hope Roko turn into

Joachim: "Any idea what they plan on doing with Banks?"
Wait until the remaining two years of his contract expires! Nobody's going to take him unless it's part of a larger transaction (i.e., to make numbers work, etc.).

Any ideas on a 3/4 being brought in for defensive purposes? i heard James Singletons name being thrown about...
Blogger's note: Not sure where your conversation happened but I know it didn't occur with any of my sources because I've never heard that name once

4 years 20 million according to Stein and Ford at Espn....Indiana likely wont match...we have our man

Indiana Pacers restricted free agent Jarrett Jack signed an offer sheet for four years, $20 million with the Toronto Raptors, NBA front-office sources told ESPN.com.
Jack
The Pacers have seven days to match the offer, which they expect to receive Sunday or Monday. Given the Pacers financial situation, it's unlikely they will match the offer, a source close to the process told ESPN.com.
Jack averaged a career-high 13.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists for the Pacers last season. He started the final month of the season.
Jack would probably back up Jose Calderon at point guard in Toronto.

According to ESPN it's 4 years $20 million. That's Marcus Banks money. It's almost their whole MLE..... depending on how it's structured so we might not be seeing Rasho. I was actually hoping that the Raps would make a move for Jack when he came into the league. He's a real solid point who's strong and can defend. That said between Calderon, Jack, Banks, Ukic, and Douby the Raps will have around $20 mill locked up in point guards.

Hey Doug,
ESPN released the terms of the deal and it's something like $20 million for four years... Doesn't this affect the re-signing of Bosh and is Jack really a $5 million dollar a year player?
Thanks for the great work as always!
Blogger's note: No, and if he can get $5 million, yes. Ask yourself this: Is Jarrett Jack an average NBA player? The average NBA salary is about $5.9 million per year

NBA.com is saying that Jack was offered the full MLE. Is that too much or is that just perfect for the Pacers not to match?

"Raptors offer 4 years, $20M"; "Given the Pacers financial situation, it's unlikely they will match the offer, a source close to the process told ESPN.com"
possible 2009 lineup:
calderon/jack
derozan/wright [I don't know much about his game]; probably delfino/jack here
turkoglu/delfino
bosh/evans
bargs/rasho
i'd like to see:
pob bought out; pops signed (saw that 5-95 comment, but still would like it)
some movement of banks/douby/wright/george/ukic? so we can sign joey back.
I know both are unlikely but I liked watching them both as raptors last year.

Never mind, ESPN.com is reporting its a 4 year 20 million dollar offer. Still too much?

Hi Doug
Kudos to you for keeping fans up to date on the breaking Raptors news.
I was thinking if it was possible that rather than losing Jack for nothing, Indiana works out a sign-and -trade with Toronto, a'la Orlando and gets a trade exception and expiring contracts of George, Wright, O'Bryant?
If that is a possibility, then do the Raprtors retain their MLE?
Blogger's note: If a team matches an offer sheet, it cannot put that player in a sign-and-trade transaction

The more i hear about this, the less Delfino is being talked about and Kleiza's name keeps coming up. Do you thinks thats the case?
Blogger's note: No. I'm told Kleiza's a fall back if the Jack thing falls through

Mike Wells from the Indy Star is reporting that its for 4years/20 million
http://www.indystar.com/article/20090711/SPORTS04/90712001/1088/Raptors+sign+Pacers++Jack+to+4-year+offer+sheet
I guess its the MLE, and all of it. Might be hard for Indy to match that, if the dont then we could probably only fit in a guy like Rasho and then Delfino with the bird rights?
Blogger's note: The mid-level exception starts at about $5.8 million

If the numbers as reported are correct (4 years, 20M), doesn't this preclude signing Delfino? Surely BC has maxed out the bank account and cap space by now.
Blogger's note: The word I got from an impecceable source is this should have nothing to do with Delfino and there's money left

Doug,
Your blog is starting to affect my marriage...
I've heard word that Carlos Delfino has a minor / moderate shoulder injury. Can you confirm this?
Much appreciated
Blogger's note: He got hurt last year. No big deal

TJ Ford must be rolling in his grave.

Hi Doug, please clear up something in regards to RFA for me. I know that the "restricted" attribute allows the original team to match the outsider's offer, but must the offer be signed for it to be applicable? Meaning, if Jack has no desire to play in Toronto and doesn't sign, then would the Pacers not have to worry about matching? Or does a RFA simply require an offer sheet to force the original team's hand?
Blogger's note: If Jack doesn't sign the offer sheet -- which is not going to happen -- nothing in his status would have changed. Trust me, no team tenders offer sheets without knowing it'll be signed
Posted by: Chi of Steel | July 12, 2009 at 02:18 AM
the deal is for 4 years/20 million
and why wouldn't we bring Pops back? he averaged 5 and 5 in 19 minutes or something like that, what happened with the offer we made to him did he reject it or has a team shown any interest?
and he should be on the d league team because the bigs are horrrrible.

is it possible that they could keep douby and buy out marcus banks for the roster spot....sounds like banks might be a cancer if left around anyway
Blogger's note: Anything's possible but the chance of them buying out Banks is, right now, terribly remote
Posted by: todd vaughan | July 12, 2009 at 02:43 AM
Great signing, if they can get him. I like Ukic a lot, but the last few years have shown that you need three point guards. Someone's always getting injured. It happens. Jack is a solid backup point guard who appears to know his role. Hopefully the Raps haven't given up on Ukic. He's only played one season in the NBA, afterall. You can't make a decision based on that.

Doug,
A few questions.
When Pops Mensah Bonsu was signed to an offer sheet near the end of june, didn't you say that it didn't mean anything? If this "offer sheet" is the same thing, then why is everyone making a big deal? Is it worth reporting/blogging if Indiana still has every chance to match it?
All of these reports online make it seem that you (and all of your sources) know something that we don't, and I'm getting the feeling that you ALL know that the deal is done.
Blogger's note: I never said "offer sheet" I said "qualifying offer" which is entirely different. An offer sheet is a de facto contract, that's what the player will play for next season on one of two teams; a qualifying offer is a housekeeping mechanism to allow the players' existing team to match any offer he gets.

If I was Bosh, I would sign this summer if possible.
The reality is, the team is being built with or without him in the future, and maybe, just maybe, the shrewd moves by BC are being looked at by unhappy max players......WADE.....!!!
Make a run at Wade next summer you say??? If Bosh doesn't sign soon, don't be shocked if Colangelo does all he can to tempt Wade to sign here. Would he? Hell no, but maybe, just maybe the thought of a solid team, all keys guys locked up and playing together for years might be more appealing than 1st round exits and Manhattan traffic!!!!
Peace Doug
Take a week off or something, you make all of us 40 hour a week guys look like lazy weasels........

Im really liking the moves that BC is doing this offseason, and Ive always thought he was a great GM, but after last season, I think this is gonna be his last chance to make this team win. The next year will determine a lot for the Raptors and for BC's future with the team.
If we dont make it into the second round, its a failure, and if we dont make it into the playoffs, its a disgrace. If that happens, we probably lose Bosh, BC is fired and the Raptors look to rebuild. I'd personally like to believe that Last season was an an exception rather than the rule, lets hope this team gets back on track.

Doug, would this cause the same problems similar to the TJ Ford situation considering jack played starter minutes?
Blogger's note: We'll see, but Jack spent at least some of those minutes at the two
Posted by: Manny | July 12, 2009 at 08:27 AM
Does this perhaps open up possibilities for a sign and trade with Indiana for Jack and Rasho? or have the pacers renouced their Bird rights to Rasho?
Blogger's note: No, not an option
