It's done, with one slight change, and another
So long, Nate.
Because of a contract technicality involving Quincy Douby, the blockbuster four-team trade now sees Nathan Jawai headed to the Memphis Gizzlies.Dallas Mavericks.
(The original Jawai mistake was mine, I misread some information; Memphis now gets a 2016 second-round pick from Toronto to make up for the fact they won't get Quincy Douby)
But the deal is done.
Douby signed a couple of 10-day contracts with the Raptors are the end of last season and another that covered the final couple of days of the regular season and under one of the more obscure clauses in the Collective Bargaining Agreement, he couldn't be dealt again in time to satisfy the needs of the Toronto-Dallas-Memphis-Orlando trade.
One league source termed it a "hiccup" that was resolved this morning.
And now that the official trade conference call with the league is over, the deal is done.
Again, it's Hedo Turkoglu, Antoine Wright and Devean George here, Shawn Marion and Kris Humphries and Nate to Dallas, now Jawai a second-round pick and Jerry Stackhouse to the Grizzlies and a trade exception to Orlando.
Plan on a 4 p.m. news conference here.

Sorry to see Jawai go but onward and upward...
Is there any interest in Grant Hill at all? His main concerns seem to be starting and uprooting his family. Signing here would nicely accommodate both of those issues. He would most definitely start here, creating a starting 5 with probably the highest basketball IQ in the league. Also, a transition here most likely wouldn't be that difficult for his family as they would be so close to where his wife, Tamia, grew up in Windsor. He probably wouldn't require the entire mid level or a long deal, freeing up space to sign maybe Rasho and a solid back up for Jose. Any thoughts on how feasible this scenario would be?
Blogger's note: Can't say but there are other teams chasing him

Doug, would Colangelo look to get Delfino AND Kleiza? or is that now too many wing players. Thanks.
Blogger's note: He can look at all kinds of permutations; and will

Any chance of them getting pops? Ask them if you can at 4pm and the status of Delfino!

I think the substitution of Jawai for Douby might actually work better for us, no?
My thought is that Jawai is a marginal NBA player at best, with potential health issues, while Douby can step in as a semi-serviceable back-up at the guard position. Of course, I'm not sure on their respective salary situations.

Hey Doug,
Thanks for the update! Now that the deal is finalized, about how much cap did the raptors free up to pursue free agents? (I'd assume Delfino in this case)
Blogger's note: Mid-level and biannual exceptions; about $5.9 million and, I think, about $1.9 million

espn says nate to dallas?
Blogger's note: I'll have to check that, not what I heard, but it could very well be.
Posted by: ro | July 09, 2009 at 02:41 PM
So long Nate were gonna miss ya, probably a better chance of playing in memphis tho.
Posted by: Steph | July 09, 2009 at 02:43 PM
Do we now have our bird rights to Parker and Delfino? I thought Delfino's qualifying offer was pulled? But you did say we we now have our MLE to go after free agents?
What is the salary coming in Wright and George, vs. the salary of Humphries and Jawai?
Blogger's note: Asked and answered earlier somewhere.

Hey Doug,
So now that Nate is gone, do you feel Raps can still grab Delfino, Pops and now a BIG (jawai's absense) or is BC still after Kleiza? We have MLE back so what's your thoughts?
Love reading your articles! Thnx, TheRounder
Blogger's note: My thoughts are I'm about to go to a news conference, I have stories to write for my paper, dozens of comments to sift through and I'll think about next moves later on

Didn't you say Otis Smith would NEVER do a sign and trade for Turkoglu?
Blogger's note: I said Otis Smith said, on the record and in the Orlando Sentinel, that he wouldn't. And then he did.
Go figure.

wicked! cant wait to see who they end up getting next!
Marion-Jawai-Douby
for
Turky-Wright-George + extra cap room
STEAL!

With Jawai leaving instead, does this increase the probability they'll seek out Rasho?
Blogger's note: Now with two front court openings, I presume it increases it; and hope it does, too.

Could the Raptors, at a later date (if so how soon), explore possiblities of re-aquiring Nate for Douby? I'm happy Nate was not a deal beaker on this, but I did like him and wish him loads of success.

Just an unbelievable trade all around. I really don't think you ever see a trade that appears to work out so well for all teams involved, but it really appears like every team got something that they wanted out of this?
Posted by: Alex Hopper | July 09, 2009 at 02:52 PM
Wow! I just hope the team provides this much excitement on the floor this coming season.

Hey this might be better for the Raptors. Quincy was a serviceable point guard for a team that needed a backup last year, and with the backlog of bigs, and rawness of Jawai he won't be missed. Maybe Quincy can play his way into some playing time through summer league?

But you knew that Douby couldn't be included this morning.
How? Because you read my question and sagely, but silently, agreed.
The latest trade reports of the 4 team Marion blockbuster have Quincy Douby going to Memphis.
Can we trade Quincy Douby?
According to Larry Coon’s FAQ you have to wait at least 3 months from the date of signing of their contract.
***quote***
In addition, teams cannot trade players under the following circumstances:
For three months or until December 15th of that season (whichever is later) after signing a contract as a free agent.
***/quote***
On April 13,2009 Douby was signed through the end of the 2010 season. Wouldn’t that mean we would have to wait until July 13th to trade him?
Douby was signed a 10 day on Mar. 24 and another 10 day on Apr. 3. Does the 3 months start counting from the original 10 day contract or the signing date of the last contract?
This was the 22nd comment this morning.
Blogger's note: You figured it out before a handful of so-called NBA experts with big front office titles did. Congrats.

Kudos to Lee for calling the "can Douby be traded?" thing. (Though if you decide to pull a Ray R on us, I reserve the right to renounce those kudos.)

we won't have a backup centre now. will the raps be able to sign Delfino and Rasho? or will it be one and a D-leaguer?
Blogger's note: I guess we'll see, should make the next little while a bit fun
Posted by: jeff | July 09, 2009 at 02:57 PM
Doug,
Why can't they sign Delfino under the Early Bird Exemption (or whatever other restricted Free Agent exemption would apply) and use the Mid Level Exemption for another player?
My understanding is that they are still way (12 mill or so) under the luxury tax threshold. Or are they wary about the decrease of the Luxury tax threshold next year?
Blogger's note: I was just told by someone who I trust beyond all others that the Raptors did not renounce Delfino or retract their qualifying offer and Bird Rights will get him signed, if in fact they sign him.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Toronto is also giving up a future second round pick. Please tell me this is not the case, Doug. Thanks.

Blogger's note: Yes, a 2016 second-round pick, I was just told. Which means it's some 12-year-old at the moment.

Any word on Giorgos Printezis?
Blogger's note: Not since he signed a three-year contract with Malaga in Spain

PLEASE KEEEP AP!!!
Posted by: Trev | July 09, 2009 at 03:10 PM
So the Raps have the mid-level and bi-annual, that much is clear. Did they have to renounce Delfino to get this all done or do they have the ability to sign him and still retain the MLE and bi-annual for other free agents if they wish?
Blogger's note: Unclear at this moment

I'm kinda sad to see Jawai leave. I think he had promise. What i dont understand is why ppl want Rosho back. I know hes your friend doug, but dang, that guy missed alot of wide open layups, not to mention soft to the basket instead of strong... where he would get blocked... His defense was good, but man.. ROSHO again? Hes sooo soft
