This thing is never-ending, it seems. A late-night (and final) update
Okay, it's almost bed time, for me and my sources, and this is going to be the final, final update of the night.
One a four-team trade involving Shawn Marion.
Here's what I know, from a variety of sources.
Sometime tomorrow, we're going to hear about a four-team trade that lands Marion in Dallas, keeps Toronto in the same salary situation it is now, includes the Memphis Grizzlies and, well, I don't know what other team.
Just that there is one.
I also don't know for sure what Toronto will get back or from where.
How's that for vague?
But it's the best we've got right now after initial reports that it was only Toronto-Dallas-Memphis, which could have been pretty boring.
Not sure what changed whose mind but, as we learned with Hedo a week ago, nothing is done until it's done.
Oh yeah, checking on this Brian Windhorst report out of Cleveland on an Anthony Parker story that again, wouldn’t be a surprise. I had heard Cleveland and Boston were after him but Boston blew all its money on Rasheed so that opportunity was lost.
I always figured AP for a LeBron guy rather than a KG guy anyway. And I've not been led to believe there's anything but truth to Brian W's story.
So, to recap:
Not sure what Bryan Colangelo's going to get out of all of this when the dust settles and tomorrow's over but let me tell you, I will be quite glad when this is all done.
Nighty night, as they say.

Doug, should this trade go through, does it give the Raps the cap flexibility they need in order to sign the likes of Delfino/Kleiza?
PS: Thanks for the night time report.
Blogger's note: Asked and answered a dozen times -- plus one -- around here. No, not in the three team form

Doug
So with this trade of marion, does it help the raptors cap wise? If so who are the raptors targeting first AP, Delfino? Or is there still interest in Linas Kleiza?
Blogger's note: Asked and answered a dozen times, at least. No. So, no, no, and I don't imagine so

Heard some chatter that there might also be a 4th team involved with this deal? The word is that it may also include Portland and that Fernandez may end up in T.O.? Can you imagine!!!
Note: I do not recall which source I attained this from, sorry:(
I've been reading a lot of stories of late. oh yeah, they mentioned the Raps if this deal were to go through would have to give up a draft pick or two?
Blogger's note: It would have been in the fiction section of your bookstore

Anthony Parker was one of the players who brought Toronto from a bad basketball team to respectability.
He was a good, solid player and seemed to be an even more solid citizen. Anyone who has followed the Raptors can appreciate the contribution he made to this team.
However, his play appeared to slip some last season. He was a lot more inconsistent. It was time for him to move to a team where he will not have to do the heavy lifting. I'm sure he will contribute both on the floor and in the room. Meanwhile the Raps needed to make room for younger players.
Good luck in Cleveland, AP.

Since the Raptors basically have no cash i think now is time to sign a Canadian player for very cheap from the d league or somewhere. What Canadian players are on the radar Doug?
Blogger's note: None whatsoever.

After this, do you think that the news will quiet down a little? It seems we'll only be able to sign minimum value guys, and I think the Raptors might want to wait a bit to see if anyone 'falls through the cracks', like you say some might (e.g. Matt Barnes, etc.).
Blogger's note: God, I hope so

So this deal is probably going to used to package Hump and or Banks with those draft pick(s) and/or cash considerations to another team for a one-on-one trade to free up cap space correct?
Blogger's note: A one-on-one trade cannot "free up cap space" so I fear your argument is lost before it's made

So Doug,
In spite of CB's staunch 2010 stance, will not the 2010 cap projection cause some pause in the Bosh camp as to whether they should sign for the big money this summer or does the NBAPA esgrow cover off all those eventualities?
Blogger's note: The fact the extension doesn't kick in until the cap figures for 2010-11 are determined may dissuade them; there is no financial upside to doing it today.

Alright Doug. So this goes through. How many spots do the Raps have to fill on the roster? How can they do it?
Blogger's note: 12 contracts, need one, can take up to three and can fill it with minimum value contracts given to any of the hundred or so free agents still out there

time to sign a canadian player for cheap
Posted by: Tom | July 08, 2009 at 10:12 PM
Doug
Have you heard any talk of bargain players the raptors have had talks with to fill out our bench?
Blogger's note: They've been kind of busy to be telling me that kind of stuff
Posted by: josh | July 08, 2009 at 10:13 PM
Any word if the Raptors will get a decent trade exception?
Blogger's note: No; I don't know how it works in a three-team deal, nor do I really care at the moment. That's for when it gets finalized

Seems to be a lot of positive comments in Cleveland about the potential AP signing. Nice to see. Good guy. Will be missed.

So if this doesnt free our cap space..what in the world does it do for the raptors? Just help shawn Marion?
Blogger's note: They may get a bad pick, or some cash. Or they just pick up some good will, that can't hurt, can it?

Hey Doug a quick question regarding the Marion sign and trade, how would a fourth team have affected the deal seeing as with three teams they essentially got what they set out to do. Would they have gotten something in return?
P.S. you should do more radio gigs I love listening to you
Blogger's note: I have no idea, it was far to complex to even comprehend. I was waiting for the dust to settle before diving into that one. It's why you don't see four-team deals too often

Doug you should get some sleep!
Blogger's note: Trust me, in a minute, I'm gone

I think this shows that in the event Bosh decides to leave (whether it's likely or not is another story for another day... but run with me here :) )it shows that BC can get a deal done that accomodates all parties. I imagine getting a S&T done with Marion given his age, the economic climate of the NBA would be much more difficult than one involving Bosh.
Anyway Doug, any interest in Kleiza? (kidding....)

A one-on-one trade can free up space. You send Banks or Hump to a team with salary cap space, they just send back a pick. Space is created, you should know that Doug.
Blogger's note: That's one-for-none; I guess I misunderstood somehow. Yes, in your scenario, that's right. Now, find a team with either $2.9 million (Hump) or $4.4 million (Banks) of cap space and an interest in either and we'll talk
Posted by: ColangeloIsGod | July 08, 2009 at 10:30 PM
So here are the players already locked up:
Bosh PF
Bargnani PF/C
Calderon PG
DeRozan (he'll sign) SG
Turkoglu (he'll sign) SF
Ukic PG
Banks PG
Humphries C
O'Bryant C
Jawai C
Evans PF
No back-up SG or SF. Colangelo still has a lot of work to do.
And why is everyone enamored with Delfino? The guy did almost nothing when he was here. And why is the team giving up on Joey Graham? He played well when he was given the chance.
I'd rather have Graham than Delfino. And if Kleiza doesn't have that many suitors, maybe the Russian community here in the city can be a positive influence on his family to sign here.

Word out of raptorsnation.com is that the raptors rescinded Pops Mensah-Bonsu's and Carlos Delfino's Qualifying offer, any fact to this?
Blogger's note: No surprise if it is true, right?
Posted by: adam | July 08, 2009 at 10:46 PM
so why would raptors make this deal....just for goodwill?.....or do u think they have a backdoor deal in place where dallas would sign say a matt barnes and trade him for hump?
Blogger's note: All good questions for another day, just did one final update and I'm outta here
Posted by: trini man | July 08, 2009 at 10:48 PM
Thanks for the news Doug.
As a Raps fan in general but also AP fan in particular, I'm glad for him - if the contract gets finalized - to go to a contender, and regardless of him coming from the bench or not, I;m sure he will be very valuable for the Cavs both on and off the court.
One thing I wonder....if so many people here forgot Delfino's play from two seasons ago and would love to have him back....why the Cavs (or the Celtics for that matter) thought about talking with AP???? Go figure....

I really wanted to see Pops back. I loved watching him play, and he would of been a true fan favorite. Unfortunate, what kind of money would he command from teams?
