Another trade on the horizon?

Man, a guy goes to the dentist, gets back and it looks like work might be calling again.

According to a couple of league sources and I can't corroborate this with any of my most trusted Toronto folks, Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo's got another deal bubbling, one that would send guard Marcus Banks to the Dallas Mavericks for Matt Carroll, adding a little long-term salary but providing coach Jay Triano with a shooter that he could use deep on the bench.

I'm warned -- and therefore so are you -- that the proposed transaction remains in its relative infancy and if this summer's proven anything it's that nothing's done until it's done. But just as we suspected, Bryan is thinking of moving a salary for one that’s a bit longer but not that much more expensive in the long haul.

Carroll, a 6-6 guard who will be entering his seventh NBA season, has four years left on his contract, he’ll make $4.7 million this season, $4.3 million in 2010-11, $3.9 million in 2011-12 and $3.5 million in 2012-13.

It’s more money and years than Banks has left – he’ll get $4.53 million this year and $4.8 million in 2010-11 – but the way Colangelo has structured his roster financially over the next few years makes the extra cost on the Carroll deal not that large a burden.

What Carroll can bring is to be determined. He’s a good shooter – a career 40 per cent shooter from three-point range – but on a Raptors roster pretty stacked at the wing spots, he’ll be an emergency fallback for Triano.

Banks? Well, Banks never really worked out after being obtained in the Shawn Marion trade last season. He hardly played, was mediocre when he did and then got hurt and missed about the last month of the season.

He didn’t take the team’s suggestion and play in the summer league last month – although he was in Las Vegas to meet with the staff and work out – and the GM’s been trying to deal him for months.

And in another strange twist to Banks’ career, he’ll be reunited with Marion one more time.

They were traded with each other from Phoenix to Miami in the Shaquille O’Neal trade and then moved in tandem from the Heat to the Raptors for Jermaine O’Neal.

Carroll’s bounced around for his entire career. He spent time with Portland and had a cup of coffee with San Antonio after leaving Notre Dame and then spent more than four seasons in Charlotte. He was traded from the Bobcats to the Mavericks at the deadline last season.

I have always gotten the feeling that the other players just highly disliked banks and he did not fit in, myself Id rather have banks on DNP for another year and trade his expiring for something of value if I could if he was a distruption in the locker room.

If you were BC would you make this trade? Or would you rather have the financial freedom 2 years from now?

Blogger's note: Or would rather have a guy on a really cheap contract two years from now.

"Matt Carroll is basically the same type of player as Jason Kapono is he not?"

If you're looking at it that way, then we got Evans for Banks. Works for me.

I watched Matt Carroll knock down some dagger threes with Charlotte against the raps...if you can't beat em join them...nice move BC..to the doubters, Bryan would not make a move unless he knows all the long term effects..The mans got a plan ..can't wait for 09-10

So who is on the inactive list? Weems, O'Bryant and Douby?

Blogger's note: Some night, yeah, that's likely it.

Hi Doug, who's the defensive stopper at the shooting guard position now? I thought Delfino supposed to be that guy.

Do you know what Jay thinks about it? If you're the coach, who will you put as your SG to stop the other team when the game is on the line?

Blogger's note: Depends, could be Wright, might be DeRozan, could be Belinelli; and there are only a handful, less than a handful of "defensive stoppers" in the game. It's team defence that works. No one guy can stop any one other guy basically.

You wrote that Dallas do this deal for long term financial savings, so why does it make sense financialy for the Raptors to make this trade

Blogger's note: Gets them further below the tax level in each of the next two summers; gives them a very cheap asset in the final two years. And they get a guy who can do at least one thing -- shoot -- for a guy who wasn't going to do anything

I don't get this trade at all. Its basically a garbage for garbage deal. Why would you want Carroll instead of having an expiring contract sooner? You are trading two pieces thats won't see any signifcant minutes, in exchange for committing longer to Carroll? Maybe BC thinks he'll be able to move Carroll after a year or so, as opposed to Banks who will forever be useless.

I know we ALL want Marcus Banks gone, but Dallas fans probably feel the same way about Matt Carroll and his contract! Its a marginal deal if anything.

Hey Doug,
If a team has 15 signed players, how many can it dress for a game? Can they change who they want to play on a game by game basis or are they suppose to declare some people as "injured"?

Blogger's note: There's no injured list anymore, hasn't been one for a couple of years. All teams have to do is declare an "active" and "inactive" list an hour before game time and it can be changed night to night. The most they can dress for a game is 12

Am I the only one that thinks this is a bad deal? Trade a bad salary for a worse one makes NO sense especially when he is not projected to be much of an impact player.

I searched the entire league high and low for a longer contract than Banks with roughly the same salary. Totally missed out on Matt Carroll.

Doug, I'm pretty sure you haven't been following him but, any reason as to why he has had such a decline since his breakout year of 06-07?

Thanks for being the first to break this story!

Blogger's note: Playing time had a bit to do with it; Charlotte got Jason Richardson and some other bits; and he was not as good as anyone ahead of him in Dallas, that's for sure

I agree with John, it's a horrible deal.

Doug,

I like the idea of getting rid of Banks (ie wasted money) and getting a usable part in return.

Considering that Carroll is then locked up for 4 years, would that make it less likely that the Raps would exercise the team option on Belinelli for 2010-11? Or are they likely to horde as many assets as possible? Don’t they have to decide on the option before the season starts?

Blogger's note: They have to exercise it by the end of October and because it's for one year and cheap money, you can be sure they will

This trade was quite simply, bad. In one more year we could've had a 4.9 million dollar expiring contract, which at the very least is an asset at the trade deadline. But now we are taking on 2 more years of salary for a player who is overpaid! I loved most of the moves BC has made but not being able to get a draft pick out of Delfino/Ukic and also taking back more years and salary for a player who will not play is disheartening.

Blogger's note: Next summer, when everyone in the world is chasing a great crop of free agents, do you honestly think general managers would be looking to assume $4.9 million in salary? I don't.

The talk out of Phoenix seemed to be that Marcus Banks lost some interest in the game after he signed his contract. Matt Carroll is a respectable shooter, which as stated above is never bad, and ultimately he is still a tradeable asset. Expiring contracts are all the rage right now, but in another year teams will be committing money to players again and shooters always have their suitors. If Colangelo can move Banks then he can just as easily move Carroll a little further down the road.

I personally wouldve liked to have delfino on the team as the backup 3, he can slash, defend, drive to the basket and take a hit. not sure carrol can do anything but shoot, we still need a defensive minded player, belli and carrol cant defend.

not sure im agreeing with this 15 man roster deep, i like it, but i would rather have cap space sooner then later and have a super loaded 9 man roster, and some minimums.

but oh well, if banks did want to go to summer league, then if i was gm i would flex my muscle and want you out

Wow…I’m also a bit concerned about the wings after Turkoglu, especially from a rebounding perspective (hopefully DeRozan progresses quickly), but the thing I love about this team right now is the versatility. There are so many different looks Triano can throw out on the floor, and everyone from 1-12 can play. I guess POB and Weems will be the perennial DNPers, but who’s the 3rd guy? Douby (assuming Marco can play the PG a bit)? Carroll?

Doug

I just got a phone call from my IT department here at work. They noticed I have been frequenting this site WAY too much this summer....they thought it HAD to be a porn site I somehow got past our firewall !!

Exciting summer to be sure, enjoy the peace and quiet until camp opens

I really like Marcus Banks and his defensive ability and feel he is a better fit as he can play some backup PG if one of our goes down.....with that said Carroll is a better trade chip

Doug somewhat off topic, what coaching staff will remains from last year still? Just gets me thinking we only have 3 players from the team that started last year, then that got me thinking on what assistant changes were made

Blogger's note: One new assistant in Marc Iavaroni; one new assistant-devleopment coach in Alvin Williams

really like this trade (if it happens). Marcus Banks is a bench warmer and didn't really look like he wanted to be here. Matt Carrol looks really good and versatile. hey doug how close is this deal from being finalized?

Blogger's note: I'm not sure; I'm hearing it's pretty far along

Amazing. This morning I was asking your over/under on a buyout for Banks, the only remaining puzzle piece in this lineup. This miracle trade sure as hell beats a buyout! And how anyone could possibly refer to Matt Carroll's game as "garbage" is beyond la la. Dinosty got it right: Carroll's got the kind of game Kapono could only wish he had. To have this guy down there at the end of a long and talented bench is pure, pure luxury. And at no extra cost! BC earns GM honours for this season AND next at this point. Let's NBA already!!

I hope this trade happens. We all wanted Banks gone for somebody, anybody, I think Carroll is a good move. Like a lot of people have been saying, the guy killed us when he was a Bobcat. Even if he doesn't get playing time somedays, at least he's a team player who's going to be there with the team and supporting.

BC talks about this deal a little bit today on FAN590 Audio. If you haven't already, check it out...

What Triano said the other day was probably the foretelling of something in the works. Like he said, you can't have enough shooters. Carroll is a solid guy to come in incase of foul trouble or injury.

And Doug, I know you don't know what BC is thinking, but do you see him holding on to Weems or waiving him? I think it'd be wise to keep him. He likes to run - and I assume were still planning on beingn primarily a fast-break team, correct? And if he does waive him - maybe we sign Ime Udoka to replace him?

Blogger's note: Every indication I ever got from any source any time was that they are not waiving people and taking the cap hit without getting anything back

I believe it is a good deal, given this team now (sort of)resemble the VC era team. Evans as PF vs Davis as PF, shooters (Curry, Dee Brown vs Belinelli, Carrol etc.) The only concern I have is chemistry and I think we are missing a glue guy when we lost Anthony Parker. Doug, given the team just turn-overed 12 out of 15 guys, who, in your opinion can be the "glue guy(s)" for the Raptors team?? Thanks and have a great day

Blogger's note: I don't know and won't until someone sees them interact

"he’ll make $4.7 million this season, $4.3 million in 2010-11, $3.9 million in 2011-12 and $3.5 million in 2012-13."
Doug,
is it just typing error or Carroll really got his pay reduce every year.

Blogger's note: No, it's right
