Doug Smith has been a sportswriter for more than 30 years, a journey that's included seven Olympic Games, numerous and varied championships and more dreary regular season games than he'd care to remember. Here, he'll talk about them all, as well as current events and pop culture. (Just don’t ask him about music nowadays — it's not his cup of tea).
I agree with you Doug. The key to the game is to limit the rest of the Cavs, and, to an extent, let Lebron get his. I think the most intriguing matchup is Bargs v. Shaq, because, frankly, neither of them can guard the other very well. Do you think the Cavs maybe put Varajao on Bargs and Shaq on Bosh, although Shaq won't be able to come out and guard Bosh either?

Wow shirt and tie for opening night, as the wife would say 'you clean up ok'.
So who's gonna guard LBJ to start? Derozan I guess, hmmm should be interesting.
Also I was looking for a clearly defined blog page on where everyone (you included) felt the teams would finish in the conference. Similar to other writers and of course this is based on all things being equal, no injuries to anyone significant, the Wizards get along, the Raptors catch the occasional rebound (i keed).
Cheers and congrats on the million although i might have added a few thousand on my own during the summer.

you do a good job on this...good performance your more then a print grunt...I think something that needs to be done on this blog that would be useful would be to take Raps fans out of the fishbowl that is the Raptors and highlight other teams short-comings...like last night I am not sure how it ended up exactly but late in the game the Celts bench had outscored the Cavs bench 26-10...so when people complain of Raps lack of bench scoring its not a uncommon problem for a lot of teams even the elite ones....finally opening night is here, let the games begin....the Cavs are a extremely easy team to coach again, just a matter of executing that plan, let LeBron have his 30,40,50 in fact the more he scored the better as a rap fan as he tends to take his teammates out of the game....won't be long before Shaq tires of his act.....

Thank you Doug, this is really first-class service with the pregame chat and then the blog. BTW this tie of yours makes you look very serious :)

Looking sharp Doug :)

Doug, did I read correctly yesterday that you are predicting a 2nd place finish for the Raptors in their division?????
Is that realistic if pieces like Walker and Evans (maybe even Turk and Caulderon) are injured?

Doug, more of a question than a comment. I sense an American 'like' accent on your speech. I'm pretty sure you are born and raised in Canada. Is this just a factor of spending so much time working with Americans, and being in America, or am I just out to lunch?
Blogger's note: Grew up in Canada but on the border; have spent 100 days a year or so in the States for a decade and a half, guess it catches on. I'll drop in an "eh" every now and then.

Wow Doug, smooth as prunes, man! Wondering, do you work off a script are you just winging it? Either way, smooth delivery, and yeah! you do clean up good. Go Raps! Go Doug!
Blogger's note: More winging that scripted, can't you tell? :)

Hey Doug, another added piece of content that has loads of potential. Good on you for being up for this. Some production notes (I work in production):
1) Try not to wave your hands around too close to the iSight (your webcam embeded in your mac book) they blur out so close and look huge.
2) Try to set up your macbook so that you are facing the light source (don't make it so bright you have to squint though). The first two webisodes have your face heavily shadowed, especially behind the glasses. You're on TV again! It's called face time for a reason, don't hide!
3) Try to look into the camera (It's small, I know) but you seem to be watching the window showing what the camera is capturing, meaning you seem to be looking down. This is a really common mistake that nubie video conferencers (is that a word? lol) and video podcasters seem to make quite often. It takes away from the intimacy of the format and conveys a feeling of being talked down to.
All in all I'm really glad to see an old fart like you becoming such a willing "early adopter" of these new media!
(I keed! Sorta)

Hi, Doug,
Thanks for the GruntTV. I appreciate the way you continue to explore new ways to communicate.
A suggestion from a theatre guy: you will look better if you have a light lower and more in front of you. Your current lighting scheme makes your background look great while making your face look dark -- the lower half especially.

Doug
I have to agree with D-Mac. Your delivery seems much smoother than the game summaries from last year. Has there been some formal "media training" or just practicing in front of a mirror?
Blogger's note: Just getting older and better :)
