Doug Smith has been a sportswriter for more than 30 years, a journey that's included seven Olympic Games, numerous and varied championships and more dreary regular season games than he'd care to remember. Here, he'll talk about them all, as well as current events and pop culture. (Just don’t ask him about music nowadays — it's not his cup of tea).
Ah, the great outdoors! Love it (and jealous)
Blogger's note: :), thanks

Colangelo and the brass usually stand just outside the tunnel for Raptor games... is that usual?
Yeah, he's done it since he got to Toronto and it's standard practice for a lot of GMs, close enough to see, far enough removed not be bothered
-----
ok let's see: kevin pritchard has a courtside seat, joe dumars sits on the seats (7 or 8 rows removed from courtside), chris mulling used to stand up (but he is no longer with GS), steve kerr sits a couple of rows above courtside, danny ainge sits, so does rod thorn (not sure about kiki), donnie walsh sits as well, the DOPE jeff bower sits as well, larry bird sits as well, mitch kupchak sits also, now OTIS SMITH might not sit (i am 99% sure he stands), pat riley definitely sits....
so standing up (outside the tunnel or wherever) is not standard practice...

it's to bad that 1-4 on a road trip is a realistic goal. not that I disagree, but I really hope the team doesn't think that way.
Blogger's note: They don't; and it'd be 1-3, it's a four-gamer

Late start? What late start? Your fans are scattered throughout the time zones. For many of us, it's at a very reasonable 7:30. And even for those in the east, it's a Friday night, afterall. No school tomorrow.

If they really want to end up 1-(3) this is the one they have to get! I love it! I wonder where the problem is with this team and this city! lol. Seriouss! ROTF!
My friends, if you really want to "compete" in the EC or any C, the real secret is to not set the bar so low that even lotto team are envious! It is incredible how losers disease still owns our city. /lesson

Hey Doug.
Love the blog, in-game stuff, and pre-game chat and GruntTV.
I was wondering though if you were considering trying things with GruntTV that you can't just cover with the blog. Perhaps interviews? Roundtable discussions with other media types on the trip with you?
Keep up the great work.

The weather there looks great...lucky

Doug,
Do you have a camera person with you? Or do you just prop the camera on a bench or chair and shoot the Grunt Spot?
By the way, I see the Raps going 2-2 during this trip. Just a feeling.

Well, it ain't the "Hollywood" sign, but it sure is nice to see the outdoor setting from LA - and a tree with leaves still on the branches! Might we hope for a shot of the Rockies from Denver? Or a Grand Canyon backdrop in Arizona?

Hey Doug,
You need to have interviews on grunt TV. How about the hotel maid ?
Posted by: Wes | November 13, 2009 at 06:41 PM
Doug - any word on Kaman? Big boost to the Raps odds if he is out.
Blogger's note: No word; just got to Staples
Posted by: Ben | November 13, 2009 at 06:46 PM
DS - flew down from Vancouver to catch this game...look for me 1st row uppers in my Spain Calderon....good bars in the area?
Blogger's note: ESPN Zone right across the street from Staples in a new development, and there's a Wolfgang Puck spot in the same building. Other than that, it's not a big neighbourhood bar area

Adiya
Why don't you just go for it and apply for the job with the Raptors already? Clearly you're an undiscovered genius except to all of us here who, for lack of a filter, have to scroll through your daily droppings.

Thanks for the Kaman update, or non-update as it were.
Kind of made me sit back and realize what an insane communications age we live in, where a guy sitting at home in Toronto can get an extremely specific, up-to-the minute, on-request update from a journalist working on location at the arena in L.A..
Things have definitely changed since the Raps inaugural season.
Blogger's note: That they have. Just saw Kaman on the court warming up so I presume he plays

Rebounds, defence, and the game is theirs.

Sportsnet reporting Bosh, Wright and Hedo might all be out...any update?
Blogger's note: I believe Sportsnet must have just read the morning papers since they don't have a single soul out here in LA. But they were all banged up

Hey Doug,
I heard that your favorite player "The Legend" Pops Mensa-Bonsu was waived today by Houston.
Our friends on RealGM are all looking at that open roster spot vacated by Douby.
Your thoughts?
Blogger's note: Of course they are. I'll go with what a highly-placed Raptors source told me less than 24 hours ago, that no move was planned
Posted by: Rob | November 13, 2009 at 08:30 PM
Speaking of ex-Raps, not only is Nate Jawai starting in Minnesota, he's leading the team in points at the half...
Posted by: Andrew | November 13, 2009 at 09:10 PM
What's the latest injury status for the raps players??
Blogger's note: Turkoglu's on the floor warming up; they'll make a decision after. The other ones were never in doubt, they'll play
Posted by: Chris | November 13, 2009 at 09:25 PM
Aditzya - my comment was not about whether GMs sit or stand. I dont care if they do a handstand all game. I was wondering if GMs typically sit in boxes above the floor or stay fairly close to the bench. I was satisfied with Dougs answer, thanks.

Turns out Douby's $855,159 contract would be guaranteed for the entire season if he stayed on the Raptors' roster beyond this month. They say no other moves are imminent. Yet it's also true that the move creates roster flexibility the Raps might be able to use for a future signing or trade. They now have the league-minimum 13 players under contract. Douby appeared in seven games with Toronto last season but played sparingly after originally signing on March 24. This season? Douby was on Toronto's inactive list for each of its first eight games but will come away with $105,651 for the 21 days he will have spent on the roster this season once he clears waivers.

its funny....espn.com says raptors now have the league-minimum 13 players under contract....but they have 14...
Blogger's note: Seriously, chill. I don't think anyone appointed you the world's editor.

Hi Doug: From Wyoming with 2 of the grandkids ( saw the Cowboys drop a game last night to S. Dakota State) . By the way, there is a photo up at Univ. WYO arena showing their 1903 (!!) first women's basketball team.
Is HOUSE OF TRICKS still on in Tempe? What a down to earth excellent
restaurant - hope you can get over for a meal there.
Grunt TV is getting better and better - but stay away from interviews unless you are going to have the interviewees work with you at the table.
