Doug Smith has been a sportswriter for more than 30 years, a journey that's included seven Olympic Games, numerous and varied championships and more dreary regular season games than he'd care to remember. Here, he'll talk about them all, as well as current events and pop culture. (Just don’t ask him about music nowadays — it's not his cup of tea).
Hi Doug,
I was at the "very long" game today. Was it me or were those referees trigger happy with the whistles. They were calling so many marginal calls on both teams. That's what made the game so long.
Any word yet on Evans? I noticed that he no longer has that cast on his foot. Could he be back soon? What about Jose? How's he doing?
Speaking of Jose, I know the trade Jose comments are soon to start with Jack playing so well along with the team. I doubt Colangelo would entertain such a notion for the time being but if he did, the Lakers might make a good trading partner. With Derek Fisher pushing 35/36, they're in need of a younger starting point guard. Jose might also be rejuvenated by playing Gasol. In exchange, perhaps we could get Jordan Farmaar and Adam Morrison to match Jose's salary. Farmaar can back up Jack. He's young and not a bad player. Morrison might give a bit of scoring punch off the bench but more importantly, he has an expiring contract at the end of this year. It could free up about $6 million in cap space for the Raps to use next summer. It's just a suggestion, open to discussion. Thanks
Blogger's note: Sorry, zany trade speculation is not my thing but Adam Morrison is an absolute stiff

Hey Doug, thanks for the blog again!
I was wondering what you think of the Pistons? I know there are chemistry issues and no real centrepiece or direction, but they seem to have good pieces through the rotation - veteran pros, good athletes and a little scoring punch. I thought these guys and the raps would be with the heat in the east's second tier. You think they can turn it around this season?
Blogger's note: I think they're quite average and will be lucky to make the playoffs

Joe should come up with his own ideas. That trade suggestion was put forward by Simmons at ESPN a few days ago.

You: Some very good hustle there; Jack tracks down his own errant pass, Wright gets on the floor for a loose ball and Turk hits a three.
The entire bench was up cheering
Me: It was Sonny on the floor, not Wright
[Comment From RyanRyan: ]
He also let Charlie V grab an Off. Rebound on a missed free throw doug.. he got lucky
Me: Ryan is correct.
You: That's a good call on AB, he pushed Wallace in the small of the back
Me: No he did not, check the replays....I rewinded twice...(On a side note, 3 of AB's six fouls were bogus, ask Leo Rautins)
You: A talk about timeouts at the table, they seem to have it fixed, like I do
Me: Matt Devlin said they were checking team fouls (who do i trust?)
You: And Ben made one of two; worth the gamble, I guess
Me: Waiiiiiiiiiiiiitttt....raps are up 6 (90-84 at the time of the foul), with 3 minutes and change to go in the game....they hack a ben.....woooooot....why did they hack a ben??
Blogger's note: Wow. You read closely. I'm honoured.

You (in your article this morning): They are not among the Eastern Conference elite by any stretch of the imagination but they have moved to fifth in the conference....
Me: They are sixth in the conference, not fifth
You (in your article this morning): ...were quite average but Marco Belinelli and seldom-used Antoine Walker came up with good efforts.
Me: Wait, woooot.....Antoine Walker signed with the Raptors...(They sending a message to Turkoglu or something..?!??!)
Blogger's note: Yeah, we got the Walker thing fixed, the other was a mistake.

In the game story, "seldom used Antoine 'Walker'". Yup Mr. Walker is seldom used. That Wright guy should get more of Walker's minutes, don't ya think? :)
Blogger's note: Yeah, we're getting that fixed now. I'm a dope. And the genesis of the error is about to be explained in the blog.

As long as we are fixing mistakes 'your welcome' obviously should be 'you're welcome'.
