Bosh to Miami? So says one guy
Just filed a quick news story to my desk about the Bosh-to-Miami deal that's being reported off an ESPN fellow's tweet.
No one I talked to at the Raptors can confirm or will deny it; the free agency period hasn't even begun and they are not about to run afoul of the NBA's head off.
Look for the news item shortly and then let me spend a few hours trying to make sense of it. I will say it runs counter to what I've heard as the Raptors opinion of Mike Beasley for months.
But, as we know, strange things can happen this time of year; things aren't done until they're done; and one move may just be something to set up another.
Stay tuned.

Does this mean the raptors can still try to trade Turk because the talent drain wouldn't be too bad?

Doug,
Agree on the wait and see approach. Good take as usual. Asked earlier about this, and I'm going to follow up, as much as I'm sure it annoys you. By my understanding, a 'cap hold' is the salaries of a team's UFAs, which continue to count against the cap so that teams can't sign a FA then go over the cap to sign their own guy. BUT, a cap hold only applies so long as a team hasn't renounced its FA. So, the moment Bosh signs elsewhere (barring a S&T with similar salaries) the Raptors will have 11+ million in cap space (45 mil on 56 mil [approx] cap). I know this is a little long and dense, but am I wrong?
Blogger's note: Not if they take money back

Doug - Can either of these players be traded right away? or do they have to wait until December to get any deal done?

Couldn't the Raps have just traded Bosh's rights? In other words, it wasn’t a sign and trade (it can’t be yet anyways right?), it was the Raps trading the Bird Rights for Bosh to Miami for the 3 players. This would allow Miami to offer him the max deal and go over the cap, clear their last 2 contracts in Beasley and Chalmers and then if Bosh decides he doesn’t want to sign, they can then do a sign and trade themselves. Even if he leaves for nothing they successfully cleared the last 2 contracts and can go higher on other free agents. For the Raps they guarantee a couple players with some potential.

Wow, that trade you mentioned in the article would be much better for us then expected. Grange just posted an article denying this trade however. Is it possible we're getting ahead of ourselves?

If Beasley can play SF and Bargnani's able to move to PF and stay there, it's not that bad of a deal for the Raptors. Chalmers would allow for one of the PGs to be traded as well.
Assuming this deal is true and the roster does not change any further (big assumptions, I know), who would be the starting centre on this team? Amir?

This was on the TSN.ca story:
"However, the Globe and Mail has disputed the initial report, with one source telling the paper, flat-out, "There is no truth to that."
With so few players under contract at the moment -- Beasley and Chalmers are the only two -- the Heat are, according the Globe, reluctant to move out players; preferring, instead, to give the Raptors a trade exception that would amount to nearly $16.5-million."
I think you're "stay tuned" might be the understatement of the day.

Maybe the Raptors would then flip Beasley to another team in a subsequent transaction if the Raptors have no interest in him?
Posted by: robguy | June 30, 2010 at 01:02 PM
this doesn't make sense to me from a Miami or Bosh perspective...as of right now Miami has 4 players under contract, 5 counting Anthony who is not exactly under contract...so they would after this sign and trade have 3...Bosh,Wade and Hansbrouck, even if they sign LeBron where is the depth comign from??...that team is aways away from making a serious challenge especially with Bosh's injury issues...i could see the heat giving a trade exception or one player , to decimate a slim roster makes no sense whatsoever...

There is a story in the Globe that this isn't true.

Doug, this is horrible for the Raptors if it is true. I was reading that Miami couldn't even give Beasley away and now we get him in a S&T, The guy is bad news on and off the court. I thought Bryan would know better.

Hi Doug,
Obviously this is just a "what if" (if the alleged trade goes down as expected), but do you think other teams around the league might have some interest in Beasley (assuming that what you heard from the Raps about their lack of interest was true)?
I guess they could potentially try to package him with either Turk or one of the point guards. How would you rank his value around the league - could you see other teams being more interested in him than Toronto apparently is?

i'm not keen on Beasley either but if BC is just trying to obtain assets i can live with that and the fact that his contract expires after next season. do you think BC would have any success in flipping him as par of another trade for pieces that might actually fit team needs? The Heat couldn't give him away up to yesterday but do you think its really his "character issues" or teams not willing to make a deal before FA opens?

How can there be an agreement when a team cannot speak to a free agent until July 1? :) If true, its an obvious breach of the rules by both teams. I thought Bosh was looking forward to do a recruiting tour so I'd be surprised if it was true.
Posted by: Steven | June 30, 2010 at 01:22 PM
If the story is true Bosh must have said it is Miami or nothing. Otherwise, why not wait for a bidding war.
.
If a draft choice or two is included this seems like a better take than most of the other rumours, except LA, I suppose. Beasley is worth taking a flyer on. He seemed to flourish last year, when Wade wasn't hogging the ball. Who knows he may flourish in Toronto along with all the other young guns.
What choice does Toronto have if NBA stars won't play or stay here?

Doug, if this happens, could you tell the headline guy to make it 'Bosh traded for entire Heat team'?
Posted by: Thane | June 30, 2010 at 01:24 PM
Doug what does your instinct tell you on the "neither confirm or deny"
Blogger's note: If Bosh wants to go to Miami, no surprise.
Posted by: Juan | June 30, 2010 at 01:28 PM
I guess Beasley would be the "true #1" that Bosh never was, and we needed to get rid of him to find. Our Batman. Or maybe it's Chalmers.
I'm glad Colangelo hasn't done anything to retain Chris Bosh. That's wonderful. I'm glad he's chosen Bargnani over Bosh. When you talk about unique, that's a unique position in the league. I think I just heard 29 GM's applauding. The ones with cap room were especially supportive.
I also wonder if teams like New Jersey, Miami, New York, Houston and Chicago are going to follow Colangelo's strategy and wait for Bosh/Lebron/Wade to call THEM. After all, it's not their decision. Why put in an effort if the final call is not up to you? They should use Colangelo's "tactic" of sitting on his hands and playing hard to get.
Even if those teams who worked so hard for their capspace don't sign anyone, it's not the end of the world- their teams will evolve. They will move forward.
Blogger's note: Man, you need to get another hobby horse to ride. Seriously. Get this through your head: CHRIS BOSH DOES NOT WANT TO PLAY IN TORONTO!!!!!
End of story. Thank you for your participation. Good night and good bye

Doug, Have you verified this with any of your sources?? There have been several reported rumours the past few days, was wondering why this one warrants an article when the other one's didn't??
Blogger's note: New story being worked on.

Chris B: "Couldn't the Raps have just traded Bosh's rights?"
Nope: the Raps can't take on salary in a trade because they are over the cap until they renounce Bosh's rights or he signs with another team.
Posted by: DanH | June 30, 2010 at 01:40 PM
Doug a couple quick questions:
1) Is the trade exception an automatic inclusion since the salaries don't match or does Miami get to choose if they want to trade it or not?
2) Do you think BC already has a plan to trade Beasley or is he just trying to acquire Miami's limited assets before they do a sign and trade for someone else (Lebron)?
Blogger's note: Let's see how true this is. One step at a time.
Posted by: Dave | June 30, 2010 at 01:43 PM
The 16.5 million trade exception has to be the enticing part of this deal if there is one
Blogger's note: Any trade exception would be worth Bosh's deal minus any salaries coming back.
Posted by: Mike | June 30, 2010 at 01:45 PM
Beasley, Chalmers, and Anthony for Bosh is incredibly underwhelming as far as I'm concerned. Those draft picks had better be really good. Or they do something crazy with the exception...
I'm really hoping they try and hold out for more from another team.

This makes sense for Bosh. Miami is a quality team with great management and a real leader in Wade. I just hope Lebron does not end up there also.

If this is indeed true, what are you thoughts on the players the Raptors will obtain in the trade?
