Charlotte end of Raptors deal dead

The part of a complex Raptors deal that would have sent Jose Calderon and Reggie Evans to Charlotte is dead, killed by Bobcats owner Michael Jordan, according to league sources.

The teams had signed off on the transaction that would have shipped Boris Diaw and Tyson Chandler to Toronto early Monday afternoon – with Chandler being told he was to become a Raptor – before it died later in the day.

The other part of the transaction – Hedo Turkoglu from Toronto to Phoenix for Leandro Barbosa – is still a go and could be finished as early as today.

The nixing of the Charlotte part of the multi-team transaction is a sorry saga. The highly-respected Marc Spears of yahoo.com first reported Monday afternoon that Chandler told him he’d been traded. Evans also publicly said his goodbyes to Raptors fans through his twitter account before yahoo.com reported overnight that trade was in peril.

What it means in the long run remains to be seen; Toronto officials are in Las Vegas and offered no comment.

I hate the NBA these days.

Dang it MJ, get your meddling hands out of GM business!

A damn shame. I doubt we'll be able to get a better value for Calderon/Evans.

MJ needs to keep his mouth shut and be an owner, not a back-seat GM....I used to have respect for this guy, but the longer this goes on the more I lose respect for this guy...

Is there any chance this still happens in the not-so-distant future.

Blogger's note: Not in the original form, no, I'm told not

Jordan isn't going to make a very good name for himself in future deals if he's going to back out of things so close to the endgame.

Why do you think this was nixed by Jordan? Jose's salery a concern in NC with Chandler coming off the books?

Looks bad on MJ no?

Doug
Are deals falling apart like this more common than we're aware ie. is this a product of the minute-by-minute information flow of the internet age, or given that the players were informed etc. is this something more and does the league take a dim view of this?

Blogger's note: I think more deals break down than we know; but not many that are far along enough that players know they'll be traded. And, yes, this age of instant-information does play a role

What does your gut tell you regarding Calderon? Still gone or depends on the other deals BC has on the table?

What happens to players who know think they got traded but then it doesn't happen? Will they be disgruntled if they stay? should BC try even harder to move them?

I feel bad for the players involved. Such a shady way to do business.

To be fair, this didn't look so appealing from Charlotte's perspective.

Apparently, the point of contention is the TPE, Jordan wants the full TPE in exchange for Chandler that Bco got from Miami...What?!! Is MJ losing his marbles???

Hey Doug, I'm guessing this is going to be awkward for Jose and Reggie. Will this affect the probability of them being dealt this summer or will they possibly have to live with it and come back to Toronto?

Any news/thoughts on moving forward would be appreciated...

Doug why is everyone ragging on Jordan? I would have loved to see this deal go through, but it wasn't really a good trade for Charlotte. Jordan was being smart and did the right thing, right?

Well, at least now the Raptors know what it's like to get screwed over by a truly great player, and not just one who thinks that he is!

what's with the poor grammar...?

Hi Doug,

Wouldn't it be awkward now for Jose and Reggie Evans to continue to play for the Raptors since they both know now that BC tried to get rid of them? Especially for Jose. Do you think BC will still try to move them both perhaps with a different package to some other Team?

Thanks.
Blogger's note: Am sure it'll be awkward but men can resolve those kinds of issues and who knows what the future holds

Maybe Jose is still sleeping on his football celebrations, and hasn't even heard he was "traded" ... Although another Calderon deal could likely appear - a return of Jose would add some clarity to the line-up with Barbosa being a SG, and Sonny sliding to the SF where there is a bit of a void.

It looks bad on MJ because the trade was so far along that players were notified and now he backs out. How can other GMs not expect him to do the same thing to them?

I hope he comes to his senses and realizes how bad this will make him look.

Got Burned by Charlotte again! Man they really must hate us. We couldn't make the playoffs because they couldn't beat Chicago in the last game of the regular seasons and now this!

If the teams signed, how can MJ get the deal retracted?! Who is going to want to deal with Charlotte anymore? Dumb move by MJ... great player, horrible executive.

Hats off to an old pro.. if accurate.

I've been on the internet all morning, you broke the story.

A shame but can you blame Jordan? Chandler and Diaw for Jose. With the Raptors getting the better end of the contracts. Blame him - the guy woke up!

Doug,

With this deal falling through and Diaw off the table, is there any reason the Raptors wouldn't strongly pursue Al Jefferson, allowing Bargnani to play PF? Reports are that Utah is going to get him based on a trade exception and a draft pick! Toronto is no worse a destination for a player than Salt Lake City, and we just got some valuable picks from Miami. What do you think?

Hey Doug,

What what the missing word there? Chandler was ? he was becoming a Raptor.
