Charlotte end of Raptors deal dead
The teams had signed off on the transaction that would have shipped Boris Diaw and Tyson Chandler to Toronto early Monday afternoon – with Chandler being told he was to become a Raptor – before it died later in the day.
The other part of the transaction – Hedo Turkoglu from Toronto to Phoenix for Leandro Barbosa – is still a go and could be finished as early as today.
The nixing of the Charlotte part of the multi-team transaction is a sorry saga. The highly-respected Marc Spears of yahoo.com first reported Monday afternoon that Chandler told him he’d been traded. Evans also publicly said his goodbyes to Raptors fans through his twitter account before yahoo.com reported overnight that trade was in peril.
What it means in the long run remains to be seen; Toronto officials are in Las Vegas and offered no comment.

I think this actually makes MJ look good. I couldn't figure out why Charlotte would ever do the trade in the 1st place. JC doesn't seem like a Larry Brown kind of PG, and who wants all those years and money back? As a Raps fan I'm disappointed, but can see why Bobcats balked.
As for owners being GMs, get used to it. The way the league is nowadays, most GMs don't have absolute control anymore when the deals involve so much money! The days of the GM who has final say on all transactions are long gone. I'd bet more than 75% of GMs have to go to their owners for the majority of serious deals/offers, etc. Is that a fair statement Doug?

Is this karma for the Portland-Turk job last year?

Bosh leaves for nothing. BC scrambles and gets something where there was nothing. Most fans expect BC to use that something in his next move, but BC works out a crazy complex trade that is supposed to bring in needed assets. All the players involved begin saying their good-bye's when the whole thing gets cancelled by an owner with a proven lack of good basketball management decisions.
Oh I hear ya Doug! This is a much better story then a team!

Hey Doug,
Although I think the Raps need a true 7 foot center to play alongside Bargs in the starting 5, and Chandler would have been a good fit in that position, since he has no outside game, I don't mind keeping Calderon. I hope they don't attempt to trade him, and hope they take this as a sign that he is supposed to stay. Yes, we all know he can't play really good defence. People look at the efficiency of other point guards and want someone that can defend/neutralizes Nash, Rando, and etc. But why not have a point guard that can create opportunities offensively and make the other people work defensively in the other end. The point guard is the offensive coordinator, not the defensive coordinator. They should not expect too much defensively all they should want is good distribution and effort on the defensive end. It’s up to the Bigs and the wings to do the dirty work defensively. JJ is not as a good a distributor offensively and is only marginally better defensively if at all. I think both JJ and Calderon can co-exist on this team, but if one should go is JJ. The young Raptors team needs someone who knows where and when to pass, and to control the game. Calderon would have more control on this young team than JJ would. If they keep this team, with the addition of Barbosa, and add one true center, even if they have use the exemption. I think we will have a very exciting team. Maybe Jordan would be willing to take Evans and some of the exemption for Chandler? You can even throw JJ in there; he only has back-up attributes, never will be a starter. Do you think Jordan wants Chandler, or he just didn't like what was coming back?
Thanks!

I hope Colangelo keeps making moves, but I hope he keeps Calderon.

James:
"Apparently, the point of contention is the TPE, Jordan wants the full TPE in exchange for Chandler that Bco got from Miami...What?!! Is MJ losing his marbles???"
If the point of contention was indeed over a TPE credit, it's inaccurate to say Jordan wanted the TPE credit that BC got from Miami. Depending on how the the trade is worked out (i.e. with or without Evans), we would use part of our Bosh TPE to allow us to take on either Diaw's $9 mil or Chandler's $12.75 mil salary, leaving us with a TPE worth whatever remains. Because Charlotte would be trading Diaw or Chandler for nothing (and the other player for Calderon or Calderon + Evans), they would receive a TPE credit worth either Diaw's or Chandler's salary, the same way we got one from dumping Bosh. You can't ask for someone's TPE credit -- it's not an asset to be traded -- but one is generated for you if you fulfill the requirements.
And yeah, if this trade is to be revisited in the future, it can only be Calderon + Evans for Chandler or Calderon for Diaw without having to deplete our TPE credit. Sucks, but welcome back Calderon?

Regardless of what MJ says, Charlotte is still in dire need of a playmaker at point guard. They're not gonna go into the season with D.J. Augustin if they expect to be a playoff team. That being said, is there anyone else on the market that can be had with Diaw/Chandler? I think Calderon is their best shot...

No thank you to Jefferson. Bad contract, health issues, and poor defense. Bargnani's defensive woes lies in his poor help defense, and a shift in position label doesn't magically fix that. Plus, to what position would we move Jefferson then, in order to cover up his inadequate defense? At least Chandler was expiring and could anchor the team's D for a season.

I really cannot believe this and MJs reputation will be questioned in future deals as others have mentioned. To be honest getting rid of Turk is the most pertinent move and that hasn't changed so no problems really. Jose and Evans mindstate must be alittle shaken. Colangelo will have to deal them now, unless they play the game and be "professionals" until dealt.

I am kind off glad Jose is still here. Is there any chance we could see him stay in TO to run the Young Gunz?
Posted by: Ragu | July 13, 2010 at 12:27 PM
Rod Higgins should resign.

I'll take it as a sign that Jose was meant to stay a Raptor (see Williams, Alvin).

Hey Doug, any thoughts on the George Steinbrener death?Newly acquired Dwayne Jones can we nickname him Popeye?
Blogger's note: Steinbrenner in the morning, too much other stuff on the go right now

Doug,
At what point do you think Hedo knew that Bosh was leaving? With an offense that went through Bosh, could a 'new' Hedo become a fan favourite? Certainly Jose handled the dressing room knowledge of Bosh leaving with his usual commitment to the Raptors. Jose leaving breaks my connection with the Raptors emotionally, The guy improves each year, loves Toronto, and won't want out.
My son and I spent about 20 minutes talking to Maurizio at a wine & cheese in the spring and he was 100% conviinced Bosh would take the 6 year contract with the Rapjtors. We were adamant that Bosh was leaving.
Do you agree with Colangelo moving these two players in light of Brian's complete misread of Bosh's intentions. I'm convinced that Bosh tanked in the 2nd half, after the deal with Wade and LeBron was sealed at the all-star game.LeBron, for that matter, tanked as well.
How much of my musing to you agree with?
Blogger's note: Some, not all.

Doug, what's the likely fallout from this?
I mean, it seems that backing out of a deal after players and agents have been informed is just really really bad form; is this going to make other teams wary of Charlotte in the future?
Likewise, what does this mean for Charlotte's GM? A very public rebuking of his authority to make trades - is it likely (or expected?) that he'll be resigning over this, or will he stay on as a lame duck GM in name only?
Thanks!

hey Doug, I have question for you.
With the departure of Bosh, Turk and Calderon, don't you think the team the team is running out of 'creators' ... the play-makers as they say? The rest of the team seems to filled with players who are mostly feedee's, that is, they need to be fed, and can not see them creating their own shots or feeding others on any consistent basis. Correct if I am wrong, but with Bosh we had a player who could consistenly create his own shot on a one-on-one or even two-on-one situations fairly consistently, specially in the 4th quarter. SImilarly with Turk, even if he himself didn't score much last year, he was able to deliver those passes often that created scoring possibilities for others at least. WIth Calderon, as you mentioned, we did actually get quite a fluid offence, at the very least with his drive-in-dash-out plays.
So yes, who amongst the current Raptors can fill those voids? And, do you think they're adequate?
Blogger's note: Remains to be seen who emerges

The most important thing was trading Hedo. Evans is still an expiring contract and Jose is a good basketball player (even though people would disagree). Doug, is Jose's contract such an albatross? I never thought it was when you compared it to other point guards like Baron Davis.
Blogger's note: In my opinion, it isn't at all

Chris - Great Line!
Kevin - Utah has one huge thing it can offer over Toronto called Deron Williams
D Mac - This is not karma for the Portland Turk Job. Hedo Turkoglu was karma for the Portland Turk job, any more is just overkill.
I think Jose will be fine back here next year. He's pretty much been on the trading block since he's been a Raptor anyway

Hi Doug, is your assumption that the deal is dead? Other sources on the Internet are reporting this deal as still possible to go be closed.
Blogger's note: What I wrote, when I wrote it, was right

Look's like Colangelo has told Mary Jane from Charlotte to honour his trade agreement, or look elswhere for a starting PG.

I HATE MJ even more!

As bad as Vince played to force that trade Hedo's play last season made Vince look like an All Star that year be glad he's gone. I can understand MJ not signing off on it Charlotte was not getting the best of that deal by a long shot.
