Charlotte end of Raptors deal dead

The part of a complex Raptors deal that would have sent Jose Calderon and Reggie Evans to Charlotte is dead, killed by Bobcats owner Michael Jordan, according to league sources.

The teams had signed off on the transaction that would have shipped Boris Diaw and Tyson Chandler to Toronto early Monday afternoon – with Chandler being told he was to become a Raptor – before it died later in the day.

The other part of the transaction – Hedo Turkoglu from Toronto to Phoenix for Leandro Barbosa – is still a go and could be finished as early as today.

The nixing of the Charlotte part of the multi-team transaction is a sorry saga. The highly-respected Marc Spears of yahoo.com first reported Monday afternoon that Chandler told him he’d been traded. Evans also publicly said his goodbyes to Raptors fans through his twitter account before yahoo.com reported overnight that trade was in peril.

What it means in the long run remains to be seen; Toronto officials are in Las Vegas and offered no comment.

I am sure MJ will always have the last word on any transaction as big as this. It may be common practice for owners and GM's. What should not happen is an owner overruling a GM after players have been told. At the very least a case of bad communication between MJ and his GM.

EMBARRASSING! This looks bad on the entire NBA....

If I was Larry Brown, I would have tried to axe the deal too - Diop? Nazr? Tyson Chandler?

- easy choice.

How could a partial owner coming out to filibuster a deal that's officially announced? Don't GM and owners have creditbilities?

Move along, pick up the phone and dail to NOH for Collison and Okafor

Damn....

That was too good to be true.

However, there are still other options out there.

Well John Hollinger says the Bobcat avoided a horrible trade so too bad.

Any chance that now the Turk deal won't go through since it leaves the Raps without a SF (except for possibly Kleiza) and 3 starting PGs?

Doug in your response to the comment about the deal maybe not being completely dead you said that what you wrote was right "when" you wrote it does that mean that you have information now that contradicts what you initially received?

Thanks your work is much appreciated

Blogger's note: At noon Monday it was agreed to; at 11 a.m. Tuesday it was off.

Doug:

Any word on how much of the deal's death can be attributed to BC refusing increased demands from MJ (add a draft pick, etc.), and how much to MJ not wanting to part with Chandler?

The Raps can still trade Calderon for Diaw straight up since the salaries match..

"EMBARRASSING! This looks bad on the entire NBA...."

How about LBJ Wade Bosh making a scene and mocking the sports? Bird Ewing DrJ would do the same thing [sarcasm]

Chandler/Diaw is a robbery from the Raps end, Higgins should resign rather this deal passes or not

We need to have Good players, teams are stacking super star now.. Lebron claims his the king, but he cant do anything with out another superstar,

Blogger's note: Cut the vulgarity; first and last warning

How does this affect Jose's market value down the road? Are teams going to try and fleece Mr. Colangelo to acquire Jose now?

Does this mean that JJ is back in play?

Doug,

With the Chandler thing, dead.. any chance we become players in the Al Jefferson sweepstakes?

It doesn't sound like Utah is offering much to Minnesota.

Al would lock down the C spot for us for years to come and let Bargs move permanently to PF.

Too bad how this turned out. I was looking forward to see how Bargnani would play at power forward with a good defensive minded centre with him.
Sounds like Utah got Jefferson. Maybe Raptors can put together a better package for him.

What would happen if Chandler was dealt to another team in the near future for a "better" pacakage?

it was to good to be true anyways. Calderon for Chandler? Any GM in the right mind wouldn't do that. I'm hopeful BC will come up with something similar.

You guys are making me feel better with every comment that gets posted. Not a single one of you has said you are happy that this trade did NOT happen. That all but confirms my belief that this was a terrible trade for the Bobcats. Crack on Jordan for backing out all you want but looks like from my perspective it was the right thing to do.

Going through with this would be like waking up on your wedding morning knowing it was going to end in divorce, and going through with it anyway simply because its "last minute". Good job MJ!

-Mike in Charlotte

Sometimes things happen for a reason. That Charlotte trade really was a bad deal for the Bobcats - not because of the talent but the contract, specifically Chandler's. Surely more can be had for $12million.

If I'm BC here is my next phone call - if they'll accept it that is - PORTLAND.

Calderon for Pryzbilla and Rudy Fernandez or Jarryd Bayless. Both Fernandez and Bayless are unhappy in Portland.

Calderon would be a great fit in Portland as McMillan runs a half court offense with little running. Also with Roy, they need a PG who can stick the 3.

Next up - the undying dream: NEW ORLEANS

Make it a 3-way deal:

Raps: Darren Collison, Peja Stojakovic, Pryzbilla

Portland: Calderon, maybe a 2nd Raptor pick

NOH: Bayless or Fernandez, Banks, Bellinilli, Evans, Heat 1st Round pick/(maybe) Dorsey

New Orleans gets their back court filled with young, talented, and expiring contracts in Bellinilli/Bayless or Fernandez and expiring contracts in Evans/Banks, a draft pick and possibly Dorsey.

Toronto gets a young PG, a servicable centre for a year, and a sharp shotter for a year.

IF NOH wanted rid of Okafor, you could send Przybilla to NOH and take Okafor. Still have $14M expiring contract of Peja.

Just my thoughts.

Eh Doug greatest Raptor point guard of all time, Rafer,Arroyo,Billups,Bogues,Childs,Stoudamire,Rose?,Robertson,Palacio,Mason,Jackson,James,Ford,or Calderon? My pick James hard as hell and no fear.

so this deal is completely done, not happening?

So the question now: where do they go from here? Jose and Reggie seem like professionals, so hopefully they won't take the trade possibility personally. But it's hard to believe that Colangelo won't pursue other trades if this one falls through...

Is there anyone on the Raptors roster considered an "untouchable" for trade purposes?

Ouch

That is going to be a fun meeting when Jose and Reggie show up for camp !!!

"Hi guys, we dont want you anymore, but the deal fell through, so think you give 100% for us?? "

This is why stories shouldn't be written about trades before they are final.

Peace

D

I'm pretty indifferent to this trade not going through. Although I do think we were ripping Charlotte off a bit, I saw it as little more than rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic from the Raps perspective anyway.
Now I just hope BC uses this second chance to go after Okafor+Collison in New Orleans instead. Also, thank the stars Hedo's still gone at least! Good luck Steve Nash having to listen to that stiff tell you he wants "ball".

Hi Doug,
Bet you're a little busy today, but if it can be done in just a few succinct words, could you explain for me what is meant by Jose's "trade kicker"? Thanks! (Still having fun? And do you think you have reached your "fun" quota for the day yet?)

Blogger's note: It's a negotiated clause in a contract that gives a player a percentage wage increase in the event he's traded; it's not uncommon

This is funny to look at people in Charlotte rip on MJ for a bit for making the organisation look really bad and then you get Raptor fans and Charlotte fans arguing back and forth the rest of the way, thought some of you would like to see it
