So much for the Bayhawks
Got as far as the Peace Bridge, now back and working the trade.
Jarrett Jack-David Andersen-Marcus Banks out and Jerryd Bayless and Peja Stojakovic in; but as we've learned in Toronto better than any place other than Charlotte, a deal isn't a deal until the league signs off on it.
I expect that to happen later on this afternoon.
And we'll be back with as many details as possible as soon as possible.

That timings gotta hurt.

Doug, How Can Bayless be traded again. Don't the Hornets have to wait 60 days before he can be traded again
Blogger's note: Not if he's dealt on his own; it'll have to be two transactions for the paperwork

This is a great trade - Calderon has out played Jack quite frequently as of late. Jack has quickly become a new version of TJ Ford or Mike James, becoming a shoot first point guard. Calderon runs the offence and shoots accordingly. Ultimately, what we need is a lottery pick point guard in the 2011 draft. This trade will open up that roster spot. My question is where does Peja fit in with out Kleiza and Weems rotation at the 3. I also like the idea of Barbosa playing some back up point guard.

Hopefully the trade goes through. Financial flexibility going forward is a very good thing. Who knows. Maybe Bayless will turn out to be a good player too.

Going to be a long season..

Please please please let this be only the first part of a bigger deal down the road. They can't possibly expect fans to be happy about this trade for an expiring contract attached to a washed out player who makes Hedo look like Jordan... Can they?

From my understanding of trade rules, Bayless will have to be traded for Anderson directly. The Raptors also appear to be adding about 6 million in salary in the other part of the trade. I thought the trade exemption could only be used for one player deals (or something like that). Does this mean that another Raptor has to be included to make the salaries work?

Cap space is good - especially when the future CBA is unknown, and BC knows his team is NOT contending this year (unless you consider a top 5 pick contending). Collect space, picks and more young gunzzzz to develop. I'm with that - oh yeah, and I would be remised if I didn't also say that JT is NOT the coach of the future...

DOUG!
Aren't Peja and Jerryd from NEW ORLEANS? Is it a 3 team trade?

i'll wait for the comments, but first reaction is: strange transaction for NO. They have Stojakovic's expiring contract but use it to acquire three bit players? admittedly, i am a bit sad to see anderson go as i thought he was a good big to stretch out defences... as for TO, i think this is a great transaction not because of the players coming in, but because we clearly define the PG role, it opens up playing time for ed davis upon return (can take anderson's minutes at a bare minimum) and it still leaves us with a huge asset in stojakovic's expiring contract. people critical of BC just need to look at these moves to see how smart and outside the box he thinks... just stop looking at the short term results!

Has to be step one of two. Steve Nash to follow?
Posted by: Ray | November 20, 2010 at 02:50 PM
Jarrett Jack and Chris Paul are very good friends as is their parents. Im sure NO is just trying to keep Paul happy for him to re-sign. Also with Peja it spreads the floor a little bit and will give Bargs and Derozan a little more room to work

Doug I'm no capologist. But if they trade Anderson for Bayless and Peja for Jack/Banks. The second trade wouldn't work. They'd need to trade atleast 2.5 million dollars of the trade exception for it to work.
What's you take on the deal. Don't make me wait till the morning. I've got church early and I live on the east coast.
Blogger's note: I've had about 20 minutes to figure it out; clearly defines the PG role, which is good; creates a bit of a logjam at SF but I can see Kleiza playing some 4 'til Davis is ready; bit of financial flexibility; Raps are a terrible 3-pt shooting team (29 per cent I think) so that helps; doesn't alter the balance of power in either conference

Is the TPE involved?
Blogger's note: Some of it has to be

Hello Doug,
Ho-hum on this trade thing. Now, does this mean the Bayhawks' story will remain untold? Say it ain't so. (And doesn't it just figure? You find yourself in a Remote Wifi-Wonky Outpost and the Trade Of The Century (well maybe, This Week) hits? Have to resort to payphones?)
Blogger's note: D League tome must wait but maybe not for long

Hey Doug,
Who will become the Raptors' backup PG after this trade? What will the new depth chart be, and how do you see the minutes (hypothetically) working out?
Blogger's note: Bayless is the backup PG and I can't even guess at minutes.

Blogger's note: Shockingly, I am capable of independent thought. Sorry it doesn't concur with yours. Mine happens to have been shared by 28 NBA general managers on the issue and I'm quite confident I'll be proved right.
-----------------
All it takes is one GM to take a chance on him. David Kahn took that chance. BC was offered this deal (its a fact). just because your opinions match with 28 NBA general managers doesn't mean its right. With the way Beasley's playing, I am quite confident you'll be proved wrong....

Bayless career numbers as a PG in the NBA:
138games, 15.3mins,11starts, 2ast, 6.6pts, .397FG%, .293FG3%, .820FT%
Lots of room to grow, as he is ony 22.

I don't know what to think of this trade. Mostly because we dealt Bellinelli away because he wasn't able to fit in the rotation of the raps. And now we have Peja, who's fallen behind of Bellinelli at NO's rotation. It's like a step down. It's funny how things work out though
Posted by: VikZ | November 20, 2010 at 03:45 PM
This is a great trade for the Raps. The Jack /Jose story was becoming another Jose/TJ story. Andersen while serviceable wasn't going to take minutes away from Ed Davis. And, Banks was never in the picture anyway. Peja gives the team a much,much,much-needed 3 point threat. As for Bayless, don't really know him, but it was time to hand the team over to Jose (or Nash...dare to dream) anyway.

I don't know what happened to Bayless since his draft, but there was a tremendous amount of hype around him prior. Considering our team isn't exactly contender material, I hope we give him plenty of minutes to see if the change of scenery does him any good. It's all about developing players this year and nobody should delude themselves otherwise.
As for the trade details, I guess we'll see when the deal is finalized, but as far as i can tell/guess, this will have to be 3 deals in terms of paperwork. Andersen and Bayless will be traded straight-up for each other, followed by Stojakovic for almost all of Toronto's Bosh TPE (~$14.3 mil salary, $14.5 mil TPE). This then generates a ~$14.3 mil TPE for New Orleans, which will allow them to take back the salaries of Jack and Banks. They might have a TPE from the Mo Pete deal a while back, so what the final result could look like is: Toronto gets Bayless, Stojakovic, and converts its Bosh TPE into two TPEs both around $5 mil in size (Jack's and Banks' individual salaries), while New Orleans gets Jack, Banks, Andersen and a TPE almost $10 mil in size, while using up most of their Mo Pete TPE.
If this is the case, I'm a bit "meh" about losing the bigger TPE for two smaller ones, since they can't be combined to take on larger salaries, *but* Peja can essentially be used like our Bosh TPE, only with an earlier deadline (the trade deadline) and the team receiving Peja won't receive as much cap relief as they otherwise would. Hopefully some team out there will value his "veteran contribution" as well as his expiring contract!

Hey Doug,
Do you think BC should trade Peja's expiring contract to say NY for their 1st rounder and player of equal value of course.
Posted by: Adam | November 20, 2010 at 04:03 PM
I like getting bayless, i think he is completely underrated and I won't be surprised if we see him bloom over here just like david collison...
Although bayless is a shoot first point-guard but has loads of potential. I think this will help the team chemistry, holding a constant young age group of players which will come handy with our draft pick this year!! (irving coming to T.DOT!
Im sure that a second trade is coming up. hopefully we can get rid of that massive calderon contract and the reggie evans and peja contract is going bye bye after this season. next season expect alot from the raptors!!
demar, sonny and amir will continue developing...
a new draft pick
and a couple good free agents will bring this team from the bottom to a guarantee playoff team!!

Does the TPE have to be involved? Can't you trade up to 3 million dollars cash in a trade? I'll just wait until you get it all figured out. Still seems odd to me, I suppose the biggest asset that we gain is the ability to shop Peja's contract at the deadline?

A bit extra you forgot to mention regarding hindsight on Beasley: obviously we now know that Miami gets their "Big 3", but at the time, Beasley was one of the obstacles in their way. Cleveland already passed on Beasley, so do you make it easier on Miami to acquire Bosh as well? No. There's no point dwelling in "what ifs". What if Toronto had agreed to take Beasley for nothing? Well, what if there were no other takers and Miami sweetened their offer to get us to take Beasley? It's a gamble you take. Unfortunately, Minnesota agreed (so really, Kahn is the one everyone should hold responsible for making the Big 3 happen), and it's not like BC could have said, "wait no, I changed my mind, we'll take Beasley now" after Miami found a taker.
And I'm *obviously* right on things like this because I play NBA2K11 association mode, and I've started my last two seasons by dumping Jack and Banks in the Big Easy for Bayless and some other players in a large 3-way, and look, it's mostly coming true! (Serious about my video game trade being a precursor for real life, but not so serious about myself, *obviously*.)
