So much for the Bayhawks

Got as far as the Peace Bridge, now back and working the trade.

Jarrett Jack-David Andersen-Marcus Banks out and Jerryd Bayless and Peja Stojakovic in; but as we've learned in Toronto better than any place other than Charlotte, a deal isn't a deal until the league signs off on it.

I expect that to happen later on this afternoon.

And we'll be back with as many details as possible as soon as possible.

Ha.
Props to my buddy Drake (Not that Drake).
He insisted in October that Peja would be a Raptor before Christmas.
When I asked why he thought that he said, "European shooter who doesn't play D, way past his prime, but his salary comes off the books at the end of the year."
Good call, man!
I did a coffee spit-take when I read the headline today....

That said, I sense some more overhauling before the trade deadline....

i was going to ask, jokingly, howmany 1st rounders BC had to throw in... the i read from Ian Thompson

'The Raptors will receive 6-3 combo guard Jerryd Bayless, who was acquired by New Orleans last month from Portland in exchange for a protected first-round pick.'

Is this true? :(

Kinda funny Peja lost his minutes to Marco in New Orleans, and Marco couldn't find any consistent minutes on the Raptors! But whatever. I'm glad Jose is sticking around and hope for continued growth (and some success) for the mighty Raps.

first off this trade is a good one gives us a outside shooting threat which can only open up the floor more as he needs to be defended on the perimeter (Peja) and Bayless is a serviceable back-up..Anderson is a dime a dozen player, Jack went downhill after the last trade rumour..so it gives us a expiring contract and a temporary fix to our 3 point woes...but something about Bell's being traded in the off-season doesn't make sense as at the time i questioned it as we needed him, maybe a locker room/coaching issue..as there is more then meets the eye at times....also people that talk retroactively need to give it a rest, if i had bought 10 homes in the 70's or Microsoft shares when they first came out..things would be different, if you allow what ifs to run your life, your wasting energy, no effective G.M,, person ever thinks what if's..its a fools game..

What do ya know - I just saw Jarrett Jack at a coffee shop downtown today. He was busy talking on his cell phone...

plus something else I like about this trade and no one has mentioned is this...yes Paja is coming to the end of his contract...but to say that is good, gives us a expiring contract, but to me what do players tend to do in the last year of a contract, play and play well...as they want another contract....Peja this past week scored 26 points in 36 minutes of extended playing time (obviously to showcase him) and took a 10% drop in salary to come here...so he's out to prove something and don't think it wasn't a factor for BC, plus if he does play well, we can re-sign him as he is a very useful guy, ...

According to comments on Hornets' websites, the NO fans like this trade - rarely a good sign. Probably not a big deal of a trade for a 4-9 team, but giving up first rounders, even protected ones, in bad policy in a league where most teams have to find their stars in the draft.

anything more to this? I know positions are flexible but given your consistent thoughts on where we have needs and where we have surplus, we just traded 2 pgs and a serviceable big for another wing and combo guard. Didn't see that coming. BTW, word to the wise for the Hornets GM.....trading for your big star's best friend jarrett jack does not necessarily insure your big star stays.

doug is bc done for now or is there more coming?

Blogger's note: Who knows? No one saw this coming until it was virtually done

I like this deal. We get a promising young point guard in Bayless, plus we get a reliable perimeter scorer as a bonus.

Also, we're finally rid of Marcus Banks' bloated salary.

This trade sounds like one of the crazy things that the irregulars suggest that Doug makes one of his snarky comments about. why are we giving up our starting point guard, 2 more players AND some of the TPE for two bench warmers, one of whom is 33 years old?

If its about the expiring contract, that's one thing but don't' tell me its about his 3 point shooting.

Hear good things about Bayless' potential as run-n-gun pg; maybe Jose is the right guy to teach him how to manage the floor and make his mates better. Otherwise he's another Barbosa (not that there's anyting wrong with that!)
I'll miss Jarrett, but then, I always enjoyed the "two-headed point guard" with Jose & TJ. Fun for me; not so much for the players, I guess.

A season of development might get a bit longer if Jose sprains an ankle now.

I don't understand this trade. There has to be a second part to this. I was starting to like Dave Andersen and he is shooting better that Peja this season. Nothing here short term for the Raptors. Which leads to the speculation that something else must be following. Maybe we freed up a roster spot to bring in Erick Dampier which would eliminate David's minutes..

On a sort-of-related topic: where have all the people gone who have been whining for years about how the Raptors should have drafted Brandon Roy?
Anybody????

@Ian:

"i was going to ask, jokingly, howmany 1st rounders BC had to throw in... the i read from Ian Thompson

You gotta learn to read with punctuation, buddy. =P That sentence simply states that 1) the Raptors will receive Bayless, and 2) the Hornets traded a protected first-round pick for Bayless last month. Of course, who knows what the final deal holds, but you're reading Ian Thomsen's words incorrectly.

I need to make a correction to my earlier post regarding the TPE particulars of the trade. In addition to the two numbers floating around for Stojakovic's 2009-2010 salary ($14.3 mil and $15.3 mil -- who knows which one is correct), I was pigeon-holed into thinking that Bayless had to be traded straight-up for Andersen. This is NOT the case. Bayless cannot be traded alongside Stojakovic, but it doesn't mean it has to be for Andersen.

A much better outcome for the trade is as follows: Bayless for a nominal amount, followed by Stojakovic for the trio of Jack, Banks and Andersen. This would provide New Orleans with two TPEs worth $2-3 mil each (one for each of Bayless and Stojakovic), while Toronto uses up only ~$2.3 mil of its Bosh TPE to absorb Bayless. Of course, this all depends on the actual salary figures. For example, if you use the data at HoopsHype, Stojakovic makes a tiny bit too much for Toronto to take on his salary. Hopefully either the numbers there are off enough to make it work, or Jack has a trade kicker.

If the above is what indeed happens, it's a win-win for both teams. The Hornets get a much better back-up PG for its playoff run while lowering its cap figure by ~$5 mil this year, and the Raptors pick up TWO assets: 1) Only two years ago, many people saw Bayless to be a lock for 3rd or 4th overall in the Rose/Beasley draft, and the departure of both Jack and Banks should mean plenty of minutes for him; and 2) instead of a $14.5 mil TPE, Toronto now has a $12.2 mil TPE along with a $14.3/$15.3 mil expiring contract. Anyone who isn't interested in doing everything it takes to barely make the playoffs should be happy with this move.

Try again. He accepted a decrease in his 10% trade kicker...they haven't said how much yet. It's not a 10% decrease in salary...he's still making more than before.

Ouch...Not a Peja fan and Jack is playing hurt so I don't agree with everyone piling on him lately.... I also liked Jarret's contract more than Jose's moving forward if we were just going to sacrifice one of them for minimal return. This really needed at least a draft pick to be included IMHO as it looks pretty lopsided right now.

Please please please write one article relating to the salary cap that does not describe it as "arcane". Please, you know that word, I get it.

First off, I'm glad to see my comments were echoed by you in your analysis of the trade. Second, and most importantly, does this open up the door for a trade for nash? (kidding!) actually my question is more fun: once stojakovic hoists his first shot, who would you say had the quickest release ever for the raptors? stojakovic or curry?

Blogger's note: Still Dell; and don't forget Kapono

why are you guys saying "i'm no capologist BUT...."....go to espn.com and look how the trade worked....they explained it an hour after the deal....WOW
