Doug Smith has been a sportswriter for more than 30 years, a journey that's included seven Olympic Games, numerous and varied championships and more dreary regular season games than he'd care to remember. Here, he'll talk about them all, as well as current events and pop culture. (Just don’t ask him about music nowadays — it's not his cup of tea).
re: Basketball related books
Doug, very surprised you're not familiar with the 'Chip Hilton' series of sports novels for adolescent boys, written by acclaimed coach and Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Clair Bee. The 24-volume series, written from 1948-1965 includes baseball and football stories, but the basketball ones are the real treasures.
The books sold 2.2 million copies and in 1997 the NCAA founded the Chip Hilton Player of the Year Award to a Division I men's basketball player who has demonstrated outstanding character, leadership, integrity, humility, sportsmanship and talent both on and off the court, similar to the fictional Chip Hilton character.
Highly recommended, even with the American sports and world view. I grew up with these books and am now sharing with my nephews.

In your game story you wrote, "Toronto led by 12 with nine minutes left — the biggest lead of the season..." Didn't they have a substantial lead in Sacramento? Or did you mean it was the biggest 4th quarter lead?
Blogger's note: Meant of the "game." Dang! Thanks

If you want sports for boys and you can tolerate pucks, the Scott Young pair, "A Boy on Defense" and "A Boy at the Leafs Camp" are classic.

My error, that's a trilogy. It starts with "Scrubs on Skates".
BTW Scott was about as good a writer as his kid is a songwriter.
