Doug Smith has been a sportswriter for more than 30 years, a journey that's included seven Olympic Games, numerous and varied championships and more dreary regular season games than he'd care to remember. Here, he'll talk about them all, as well as current events and pop culture. (Just don’t ask him about music nowadays — it's not his cup of tea).
Doug:
I am not one to call out a coach but I think there is a real problem with Triano stating that playing time will go to those who play hardest and are willing to defend and then acting otherwise. Once you make this type of claim - as a manager, a coach, an administrator - and don't follow through then it is going to be unsurprising that noone follows one's directive. Unless there is some sort of dynamic between the coach and the front office r.e. playing time it is difficult to understand why the distribution of minutes hasn't changed.

Sometimes I guess it's okay life gets in the way and you miss out on a game, eh... Ouch! That had to hurt. Cheers.

Andrea was out for about 10 consecutive minutes between the third and the fourth quarter, almost one quarter. I think that was a punishment for not rebounding, and was also effective: when he came back he started grabbing rebounds, mostly on the offensive side. This is a hint that his issues with rebounding are more on the "will" than on the "skill" side, and that some of this Smitch-like treatment would be beneficial for the development of a player who, even being very good now, still has great margins of improvement that could lead him to become a true star if properly tapped. On the other side, in these 10 minutes with Andrea out Toronto scored a misery of 14 points, and probably lost the opportunity to close or reduce the points gap. Bottom line: probably Toronto would need another player able to score in addition to andrea, right now around him we have 1 good pg, 1 nice sg prospect and nothing else i fear

Am happy to see others are begining to feel like I always have about Triano He doesnt seem to have any idea how to coach a game Just like commentors stated Barng the man with the points was kept out of the game for a qtr n didnt get in 4th until it was half over Amir only played 1 minute in 2nd n was taken out in 1st when he had it reallly going. n then AMir didnt get in til 5 minutes left in 4th. to further complicate how can a coach put 2 non scorers like dorsey n Ed on the floor at the same time it's like playing 5 against 3. Sorry am not impressed with the T man
