A day to truly celebrate

Read. Remember. Celebrate. Smile.

We’ll get back to serious stuff a little later on.

It’s a wonderful song that accurately portrays us, our feelings and our values.

You sit on the hood of your car, daydream and look to the vast expanse of the Atlantic past St. John’s.

Not too often on Canada Day ‘cause the crowds can be suffocating but it is quite something.

Blogger's note: No longer than usual, actually

Tom Cochrane

Blue Rodeo - playing the Kee to Bala on a long weekend
An Alexander Kieth's, and a bucket of mussels - on a patio in Mahone Bay - Nova Scotia -

Larrivee and Godin guitars -

Doug,
-
I think sam has alluded to it, we've been deprived of a list of great Canadian Beers.
-
Also, if I could add a couple of Rick's; Hansen and Mercer...
-
And of course, Maple Syrup. It maybe a little too Canadiana but I dare anyone too have pancakes or french toast with processed syrup. Meh, please!

bantin and best!!!!!!! were better than the rest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you, Doug!
Celebrate, indeed.
I love our seasons and our unique Canadian enjoyment of them: fall colours in the Caledon Hills, grabbing a beaver tail and a hot chocolate after a skate on the Rideau Canal, a spring walk through the Royal Botanical Gardens, laying on a dock on a lake in Muskoka one August night watching shooting stars.
Hope you and The Super Family have a wonderful Canada Day. Cheers!

Have a look. O canada

Enjoy the day everybody.

Wonderful, wonderful list, Doug. I would just add two things, and take away one: universal health care (our system ain't perfect, but waaaaaaaay better than theirs), and Clara Hughes. And the one thing I'd take away? Smarties. They're too hard and crunchy. This is possibly the only thing the States does better than us. M'nM's are softer and sweeter. They truly do melt in your mouth!

Lake O'Hara
Moraine Lake
Mount Logan
Salt Spring Island
The surf at Tofino
Whitewater on the Ottawa River
The quartzite hills of Killarney
Icebergs floating by the Narrows
23 hours of daylight paddling down the Yukon River to Dawson
Looking out over Lake Superior from the highway at Old Woman Bay
Croissants in Quebec's Old City

Well done, good sir!
-
I'm usually running around 14-15 hour days and what you have done for me here today is given me a moment to stop and ponder what I love about my country and what it is to be a proud Canadian.
-
Great present from you, thank you.
-
The list is endless (and of course personal) so I don't think Dude has forgotten anything... it's more about what YOU remember as a Canadian.
-
So happy memories, and Happy Canada Day to all!

Happy Canada Day eh?
Thanks Doug, how sweet it is to live where we do.

Great list, Doug! Teared me up before I got to the anthem. Hope you enjoy some
deck time today and maybe even a barbeque.
Thanks, again for all you do.

Don't forget the great typo: "the medium is the massage". I love that seen iin Annie Hall with him!

Happy Canada Day from Switzerland!

Listening to the Loons on Opeongo Lake in Algonquin Park
Trout fishing in the Ganaraska River
The Trews
Northumberland Strait

Muskoka (National Geographic's #1 world travel destination)
The beaches of Lake Huron
Musk ox
The Teaching Rocks in Peterborough
Blue berets

Bennett Beach at Carcross
Mary Pickford
The Lake Huron Shore
Guy Vanderhaeghe's "The Last Crossing" (plus he's a hoops fan)
Joseph Boyden
Trailer Park Boys and Fubar (1 and 2)
Nunavut
Max Wesbter

We are indeed blessed, Doug, great list with the exception of Tommy Douglas who preached eugenics. From Wikipedia: "(his) thesis proposed a system that would have required couples seeking to marry to be certified as mentally and morally fit. Those deemed to be "subnormal" because of low intelligence, moral laxity or venereal disease would be sent to state farms or camps while those judged to be mentally defective or incurably diseased would be sterilized." The man was a blight on this great country of ours.

Simply. The. Best. Happy Canada Day, everybody! Well done, Doug! Cheers.

Good list
Amen

One problem with the videos: they suck you (me) into the youtube vortex, I ended up spending 20 minutes watching Jim Carrey clips!

Doug thank you so much for this.
It gave me the chills reading it
And made me feel proud to be Canadian.
Legendary post.
Happy Canada Day!

Doug Smith's Sports Blog

  • Doug Smith has been a sportswriter for more than 30 years, a journey that's included seven Olympic Games, numerous and varied championships and more dreary regular season games than he'd care to remember. Here, he'll talk about them all, as well as current events and pop culture. (Just don’t ask him about music nowadays — it's not his cup of tea).
