A day to truly celebrate

Read. Remember. Celebrate. Smile.

Thanks, Doug, for reminding us all how great we have it, and how proud we should always be of our country. It's amazing how that's the result of, not long paragraphs, but words and short phrases. Happy Canada Day Doug!

good job Dougie!
teared up more the once.
and you sent me on a Google hunt to (re)discover my canadian heritage.
one omission would have to be Stan Rogers or at least his song "Barrett's Privateers".
It's right up there with our national anthem and "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"
Just ask any Maritimer.

Isn't it spelled "Toonie"? Just bugging you :)
Love the list. And I'm glad somebody added YOU to it.

OHHH!!!
and the Tragically Hip!

Doug, this entry was amazing. You gave me chills!

I came here for an update on the first day of the lockout, but you know what? This was much better.

Maple syrup and canadian bacon may have been good additions. And I might go a little off the obvious track and add rotiseree chicken with chalet sauce.

How about beer that doesn't taste like piss (sorry americans but it's true)?

@LeeZ - First you mock the Legend and now you take M&Ms over smarties. You and I could not be farther apart right now.

Another one for this list coming tomorrow?:
Henderson in '72
Touch em' all Joe
Sydney Crosby's golden goal
Clara Hughes summer/winter dominance
Roy Halladay back on the mound

You're a helluva guy, Doug. It's rare that I read your blog and not get a chuckle, some tips and keen insight -- on hoops or not. The thing that I think about most is the legacy you're leaving for Super Son. Long after you're gone (and god willing that's a long time from now), he'll have a treasure trove of his dad's thoughts, and I can't think of a better gift. That's gotta give you inspiration to persevere through the daily grind of this gig. Happy Canada Day to you, friend.

Very nice - I enjoyed that. Happy Canada Day Doug!

Hola Doug,

Every year around this time I get a little homesick and super patriotic. Happy Canada Day, everybody. Don't take the country you live in for granted.

Doug Smith's Sports Blog

  • Doug Smith has been a sportswriter for more than 30 years, a journey that's included seven Olympic Games, numerous and varied championships and more dreary regular season games than he'd care to remember. Here, he'll talk about them all, as well as current events and pop culture. (Just don’t ask him about music nowadays — it's not his cup of tea).
