Doug Smith has been a sportswriter for more than 30 years, a journey that's included seven Olympic Games, numerous and varied championships and more dreary regular season games than he'd care to remember. Here, he'll talk about them all, as well as current events and pop culture. (Just don’t ask him about music nowadays — it's not his cup of tea).
I know as players they want to make the playoffs, but from the outside looking in it seems that the talent is just not there yet. We want them to get a draft pick a top 5 draft pick. How many wins / losses do you think they will pile up this year?

Now That Reggie's gone, who's the toughest raptor on the squad?

Good news, bad news for Bargnagni. What do you want first, Doug, the good news or the bad news?

Alright, I'll take your silence as meaning you want the bad news first. Good choice, Doug! Bad news: Il Mago must have had five or six rebounds literally slip through his fingers tonight, half of them of the completely unforced variety. Good news? He's boxing out, keeping contact with his man and getting in position to get rebounds. Now all he has to do is hold onto them. And I don't mean to say I told you so (alright, I TOTALLY mean to say I told you so), but in my comments post-game after Cleveland, I mentioned how JJ is constantly taking his eye off his man and cheating to provide weak-side help. Had Cleveland had shooters that can actually, you know, shoot, he would have got burned a half dozen times in game one. Well, he sure as heck got burned trying to cheat tonight, when Granger drilled the uncontested three at the end. If you watch the tape, JJ was totally ignoring none other than Indiana's most potent (if somewhat inconsistent) offensive weapon in favour of seeing if he could go for the glory and make a risky play. He has to be more judicious about knowing when to cheat and when not to. Don't get me wrong, the cheating often works, and he gets lots of steals and blocks that way. Now it's up to Coach to reign that in just a wee bit.
