The Raptors. The Blue Jays.

Tim Horton's.

A well-deserved reputation as a nation of decent, honest, polite people. For example, Bill Simmons' explanation why Steve Nash has never demanded a trade to greener pastures, choosing instead to do his best to lead the team that had him under contract: "He's Canadian."

And I whole-heartedly second your "peacekeeping."

Doug - hope the new front sports page, that doesn't have a link to this blog, gets fixed, it was really hard to get here. Tell the geniuses that did the redesign that there's no way of telling when you search by author (eg. Doug Smith) if you're getting the blog or one of your million columns (which are also good, but I've read them in the paper).

Thanks!

Jon

The Leaves

Hi Doug,
Happy Canada Day to all.

Nice list Doug. But you forgot the Calgary Olympics. I know there are so many wonderful things about our great country that it is impossible to name them all. Have a safe and Happy Canada Day.

Are all of those people signing with the raptors today??!! :). Happy Canada day to all

Doug's Blog

Well here's something quite Canadian we put together at work.

Happy Canada day!

Happy Canada Day, Doug!

I noticed this yesterday: By Smith, Doug - what's up with that? ;>)

Blogger's note: Hmm. Not at all sure

@Jon
In the old pre-google era, we used to use bookmarks or favourites. I have one for the blog and it gets me here all the time.
http://thestar.blogs.com/raptors/
Saves the searching every time the front page changes.

Great list Doug. May I suggest

Ryder Hesjedal
He's riding a special red and white maple leaf bike today in the Tour de France. And it's a Canadian made bike.
Happy Canada Day.

Thank you very much, Doug, for the wonderful celebration of things Canadian, and for your work throughout the year. How many other columnist/bloggers would take the time to share such thought with readers/fans on a holiday/Sunday morning?
P.S. Thanks for including the Bluenose (one word).

Blogger's note: Oops, will fix

Vimy Ridge

Poor Rush, they never get any respect.

Doug, any chance you might see Michael Beasley in a Raps jersey.

Blogger's note: Less than none

Happy Canada day
I'd add Dr Norman Bethune and remember this?

Thanks Doug for all that you do and to Super Family for allowing you to do it

Just thinking here Doug, which media outlet is the first to know when the Raps sign/trade anyone. Are you considered to be the top of this list?

Tommy Douglas
Neil Young
Leonard Cohen
The Band
Rick Hansen
John Candy
Cirque de Soleil
Glenn Gould

W.P. Kinsella

and on and on...

Oscar Peterson
Glenn Gould
Mike Myers
Norm Macdonald
Celine Dion
(Just kidding about the last one.)

A max contract for Hibbert? Sure makes AB 's contract look like a steal.

Doug,

WHY Steve Nash? Isn't this against the building of the team concept?
Having a veteran come off the bench at minimum salary is understandable but why spend 10 million/year + for a few years on Nash?
Spend the money on building a team.
If this would have been 10 years ago that would be a great decision.
Looks like the patience is getting thin for Brian again after two years. Being the last year of his contract he wants to have a playoff record but at what cost?

Not to mention the Senior Women's National Basketball Team: Nicely timed for July 1st.

Doug Smith's Sports Blog

  • Doug Smith has been a sportswriter for more than 30 years, a journey that's included seven Olympic Games, numerous and varied championships and more dreary regular season games than he'd care to remember. Here, he'll talk about them all, as well as current events and pop culture. (Just don’t ask him about music nowadays — it's not his cup of tea).
