Hey, do you remember the Raptors?
Under-performing Real Professional Men’s Basketball Team based in Toronto?
I vaguely recalled them until a few snippets of news dribbled out of the last couple of days.
Haven’t heard precisely why from anyone on the record but a planned free agent camp in Toronto this coming weekend has been cancelled.
It wasn’t all that big a deal, a lot of projects in to see if the HOTH could find some summer league fodder – and perhaps some diamond in the rough – but it would have been the first chance for Dwane and his staff to do any coaching under Masai’s general managership and now that’s not going to happen.
It had been scheduled for weeks and I would think maybe Masai looked at the roster that’d been assembled, saw where he was in his own evaluation process and figured it wasn’t worth the hassle, or the cost, to get it done.
And with the waves of uncertainty still washing over the franchise, I can see that making sense.
Masai and Dwane still have to sit down and have some more heart-to-heart discussions (and that’s what Masai said would happen the day he was introduced), the coaching staff remains very much in limbo with less than three weeks until the contracts of all the assistants run out, and the front office and scouting staff still has to be assembled.
One thing has to happen this week, I’d say.
While I fully expect Dwane to stick around and that’s pretty much what Masai said that day in Toronto, I think some public pronouncement about the head coach and his staff is in order.
There was just enough uncertainty out of that original news conference that no clear message was delivered; now that everyone’s in and settled, it’s time to clear everything up.
As I said, I fully expect there to be no change at the top of the coaching staff and some change to the ranks of the assistants but we really are getting to the time when decisions have to be made.
I didn’t get any confirmation on a report yesterday that said Jeff Weltman would be leaving the Milwaukee Bucks after the draft to join Masai’s front office but it makes entire sense.
They have history, it would be a slight move up the ladder for Weltman and waiting until after the June 27 draft makes entire sense.
But the key issue remains, to me, coaching.
It has to get cleared up, emphatically if only to send a message to the players who have to wondering just what’s going on, sooner rather than later.
Like this week.
This works, right?
My appreciation for deep fried brown things grows.
Stopped in the hospitality suite for a couple after Game 2 – you have to decompress even if it means only a couple hours of a night nap because sleep’s not coming anyway – and they’ve got the requisite spread out for us.
Wings, some cheeses and crackers, other DFBT and there’s one I’d never seen before:
Macaroni and cheese bites!
Yep. Little nuggets of mac and cheese, breaded and deep friend and, yep, they are just as tasty as it sounds.
Had never seen ‘em before and if we have to traipse back to Miami in a week – and I’d really like to get home, thank you very much – we’ll be looking for them for sure.
I’m trying to think the last time I had connecting flights and was lucky enough to get middle seats on both legs with both planes so full they were seeking volunteers to delay their travel.
Yeah, the 90 minutes sleep leading into the day was hardly enough; a fella can get a tad cranky under those circumstances.
And I wasn’t even some big shot guest of the day when I checked in to my hotel here in San Antonio because it's a Hyatt that I've never stayed at.
Yeah, not the greatest of travel days and here’s one thing I don’t get, maybe an Irregular in the business can let me know:
How do they overbook planes?
Shouldn’t, once they reach capacity on any flight, they stop selling tickets? Not sure what’s to gain by selling more tickets than you have.
And while it’s nice that they made it sound so enticing when they were offering Six Hundred Delta Dollars to wait and take a later Atlanta-San Antonio flight, I’d have listened a lot more closely if they’d been offering Six Hundred American Dollars.
In fact, wonder what would have happened had I told them – or any other airline – that for the right amount of cash and a guaranteed business class seat on the next flight, I’d be more than willing to change.
I’m not the greatest of negotiators but I’d say that’s one area where I could make demands. Wonder if they’d listen.
Six coaches whose teams made the playoffs last year have either been fired or not had their contracts extended now that Lionel Hollins is officially out of work in Memphis.
And I don’t know where the blame – if there is such a thing – lies in this.
I guess I’d probably split it evenly between impatient owners and impatient general managers who always seem to think the next guy is the answer.
And they’re often wrong.
So what’s going on back there?
Feels like I’ve been gone forever and am kind of behind.
My Argos doing ok?
Weather all right?
Any City Hall news I should hear about? Haven’t heard a snarky word from any of my colleagues so I’m guessing nothing of significance in the world for municipal politics.
