First, we had Craig McKinnon, who came off looking like a bully.
Now, we have Justin Rego, who came off looking like a liar and a coward.
Our Canadian guys are really making a name for themselves on The Bachelorette.
Just as the Internet spoilers have been predicting for weeks, wrestler Justin got the boot on Monday's episode of the show in Istanbul, Turkey. Or to be more precise, he ran away from Ali Fedotowsky as she tried to confront him about the phone call she received from his girlfriend back in Toronto.
Yes, that's right, he high-tailed it out of the hotel (as fast as a guy whose broken leg is still in a boot can, anyway) and then, when Ali pursued him outside, he even tried to get into a locked restaurant and hobbled through shrubbery to avoid talking to her.
"I just wanna get out of here. If you want to talk off camera, I'd be more than glad to talk to you. Don't touch me," Justin exclaimed as Ali placed a hand on his chest.
"Justin, you're seriously going to walk away from me? You're going to go out like this? This is how you want to be perceived?" she asked incredulously.
"Absolutely," he replied.
Let's back up a little. The show began with Bachelorette host Chris Harrison coming to Ali's room with the bad news. He put her on the phone with former Bachelor contestant Jessie Sulidis, who passed the phone to a woman named Jessica.
"Basically me and Justin have been dating for the past almost two years," Jessica began. "And a couple of months ago he said, 'You know what, Jess? I'm going on a show, but it's only for the purpose of getting my foot into the door of the entertainment industry' and his wrestling career. And he assured me that when he would come back we would be together and finally start our plans to get married," said Jessica, who appeared to be choking back tears as she spoke.
The plan was for Justin to make top three on the show, Jessica told Ali. She helped him buy a suit and get a head shot taken for the series. But Jessica decided to pull the plug one night after Justin called her to tell her how much he loved her because she had discovered that he had another girlfriend.
Duh duh duh duh.
Ali was suitably angered.
"I think the thing that upsets me most is how he just said he wants to find his wife, he's here for the right reason. He said I'm here for the right reason so many times ... what a jerk. ... It's disgusting what Justin did. It just makes me sick to my stomach and I'm not going to let him get away with it. I'm gonna go downstairs and confront Justin. I want him on the first plane back to Canada."
Apparently, Justin had the same idea.
After Ali called him out in front of the other six contestants, he grabbed his hoodie and his ball cap and walked out.
"No, no, no, sit down and talk like a man," Ali called out.
"No, because I'd rather just not say anything," Justin replied.
"I got my passport, I got my wallet, that's all I need," he told Chris Harrison, after the host followed him out into the hallway.
The other guys watched the drama from the window of their suite as a dogged Ali confronted Justin again outside.
He finally sat down to talk with her after fumbling around unsuccessfully for an escape route; Ali surmised, probably correctly, that he needed the time to come up with a good story. But it wasn't all that good.
"I know you probably want to rip my head off right now, but basically, with me and Jessica, I never, you know, you know, yeah, I have, you know, strong feelings for her, but like, honestly, she is someone that I would say is like my best friend.
"And I thought I was going into this with about 100 per cent of my heart, but as the process and as the weeks went by my heart became less and less into this."
He even had the rose from his two-on-one date with Ali and Kasey in his pocket, ready to give back.
But when he denied Jessica's story about his plan to become famous, he sounded about as convincing as one of those ridiculous WWE plotlines, especially when he refused to call Jessica a liar.
"I came here to find a husband and you're f--king with that," Ali stormed. "I gave up my job. I gave up my apartment. I gave up everything to be here and for you to do this, it's awful. It's unspeakable what you've done not only to me but to her."
"So on that note, I'm sorry for everything," replied Justin as he walked away for good.
As the camera followed his walk of shame, the audio was of saved phone messages he'd left for Jessica, declaring his love for her.
"You are my everything, my best friend, my partner in crime. you are my world and I want you to be my wife," went one.
"Jess, I don't know why you can't pick up the phone. I'm in Iceland right now," went another, putting the lie to Justin's adamant protestation that he absolutely had not called Jessica while he'd been on the show.
"Honestly, you do know how important you are to me and going through this process made me realize that even more. It kinda made me regret coming up with this thing."
Well, the thing is done and Justin, in Ali's words, "left like a coward. He hung his head, put his tail between his legs and walked out."
A couple of thoughts before I get back to the rest of the recap: Is it not curious, if Jessica first learned about Justin's other girlfriend just a couple of days after he left to begin shooting The Bachelorette that she waited until weeks into the process to spill the beans to Ali? If Chris Harrison had just found out about Justin's deception and come straight over to tell Ali, how is it cameras were able to get to Toronto so quickly to shoot Jessie and Jessica's side of the phone call? As the competitors' numbers dwindled, it was probably becoming pretty obvious Justin didn't stand a chance at top three. He hadn't even kissed Ali on the lips, at least not that we saw on camera. But if you can't make top three, what better way to make a name for yourself than to leave the show at the centre of an explosive scandal. And could it be, despite her protestations, that Jessica's phone call was just another part of the plan to help her boyfriend further his entertainment career, especially given the cozy photos of the two that turned up in Life&Style just last week? Just asking.
Back to the recap. Let's talk about that kissing thing. I'd say it's a pretty safe bet that any guy who hadn't yet kissed Ali this far into the show was not going to make it to the end.
So why did Craig R. think that cuddling with Ali on a boat cruise, cracking jokes while eating dessert and then laughing through a fireworks display was a sign that they were into each other?
Dude, she has sucked some serious face with all of the other guys. You've even had to sit and watch some of it. Your date ended with a hug.
So it was no surprise when Ali cancelled the end-of-show cocktail party and went straight to the rose ceremony, telling Harrison it wouldn't be fair to the man she wanted to send home to lead him on, who the unlucky guy was going to be. Hmmm, could it be the only one of the remaining six she hadn't kissed?
You have to love how they dragged out that final rose, though, Ali's eyes darting between Kirk and Craig, as if she was really going to send scrumptious Kirk home for a guy who looks like Toby Flenderson from The Office (that's another blogger's observation, I'm just agreeing with it here). As if.
Just a few words more before I wrap up about Monday's dates.
Craig won his one-on-one during a group date wrestling match, in which he, Roberto, Chris L. and Kirk first had to wrestle four professional Turkish olive oil wrestlers -- hulking, mean-looking fellows in bare chests and black leather pants -- and then each other.
You have to give the producers points for originality and for taking any opportunity to show the female viewers the bachelors with their shirts off.
"This is not fun," cracked Chris L. "What did you guys do in Turkey? I got naked and wrestled another man ... Usually what I do with olive oil is dip bread into it or cook asparagus on the grill with it."
Not surprisingly, the pros finished off Ali's suitors in nothing flat. It was a little surprising that lawyer Craig, who professed the only thing he usually fights with is words, managed to beat first Chris and then the very athletic Roberto. Maybe he really was that desperate for one-on-one time with Ali.
The evening's other two individual dates went to Ty and Frank.
Ty and Ali's date seemed to go swimmingly. There was some sightseeing, a private session in a real historic Turkish bath, where they got to kiss and cuddle and give each other massages wearing nothing but fetching gingham towels, and a romantic dinner by the river.
But for me it came to a screeching halt when Ty confessed that one of the reasons he divorced his first wife was because "my mom stayed home while the kids were at school and dad worked. That's what I was accustomed to."
Had I been Ali, I would have grabbed my rose and run at that point, despite Ty's protestations that he had changed and would never question anything she did career-wise.
But Ali gave him the rose while warning, "Traditional is the last word I would use to describe myself." Still, she found Ty was open and honest, "and 98 per cent of men I know who couldn't make a marriage work wouldn't do what you did tonight."
Her date with Frank, meanwhile, was described as a make it or break it situation since Frank's recent behaviour, i.e. his jealousy, insecurity and general wishy-washiness, had disappointed Ali.
But wouldn't you know they got their groove back wandering through the spice bazaar, sampling the food, dickering to buy a rug, trying on silly outfits like a turban for Frank and a belly dancing costume for Ali.
Then there was a romantic dinner inside a cistern, on a platform surrounded by water and massive columns and archways.
Frank talked about how much he'd missed Ali and how when the time came for him to marry, he only wanted to do it once.
"Part of the reason I'm still single and I'm 30 is because I've been very cautious. You know, it goes back to what I said: I want to do it once. But I'm ready to trust my heart."
And then, after they'd kissed and Ali had handed over the date rose while asking Frank to "continue on this hard, difficult, emotional journey," Frank declared: "I'm falling for Ali hard."
Or not. The promo at the end of Monday's episode showed Frank saying he's going to do "something that's going to hurt" and telling Ali they need to talk, after which a sobbing Ali says, "He knew how attached I was to him ... I feel like there must be something wrong with me." It certainly looks like Tahiti, where the show travels next week, is the end of the line for Frank, to which I say good riddance.
