More on So You Think You Can Dance Canada

For those of you who asked about a petition to save So You Think You Can Dance Canada or at least a place where you could express your displeasure at the cancellation, check out this Facebook page.

Also, Mary Murphy tweeted that she will be expressing her thoughts on the cancellation on Wednesday at marymurphy.tv, which is her official website.

And I just wanted to add a comment on something that was in the Star's story (which I contributed to). A source told my colleague, Raju Mudhar, that the ratings for the finale were down around 30 per cent. Well, yeah, duh, the finale was the same night as the 10th anniversary of 9/11 when all kinds of people were watching shows about the terrorist attacks. Of course the ratings were down.

It also wasn't exactly convenient that CTV scheduled SYTYCDC this year to overlap with the U.S. version of the show. That certainly didn't help ratings, but I would also say ratings for Dance Canada were still extremely healthy for a Canadian show in the dead zone of summer. But hey, what do I know? I'm just a blogger.

Feel free to contribute more of your comments about the cancellation. I'll keep you posted if I hear of any new developments.

Great point! You should go tell that to CTV so they can be convinced that the show should come back!

I love the concept of SYTYCD and watch every episode of the American version as the U.S. channels are on our basic cable lineup in Thunder Bay but not CTV. So our access to the show is only through either purchasing another level of cable or satelite or MM Fri evening. I still watched but the show should have been re vamped - too many judges and not the greatest imput and should have had more dancing - oh and maybe a different hostess. I find cancellations based on ratings based on certain age groups very flawed and exclusive and I think over 900,000 viewers in the summer and against the Amerccan version very good and so wonderful for the enormous talent of our dancers and the future of dance. Makes me shudder that so many reality shows without talent seem to survive.

My wife and I called it: "So you think you can judge dancers Canada"!

Frankly if it weren't for the overwhelming talent, we were on our way to tuning out.

We are in our late 40"s and really appreciated the exposure the dancers were getting - and so find that a cancellation to be very disappointing in terms of future opportunities for these dancers!

I was also not impressed with all the Canadian bravado from the judges - the fact that they are Canadian dancers doesn't provide any critical advise.

My wife and I are in our late 40's. We really enjoyed Dance USA, and naturally made the transition to Dance Canada.

Frankly speaking, we almost tuned out of Dance Canada due to the over judging. We coined it: So you think you can Judge Canada.

Jean Marc with his long quasi-inspirational speeches and full on Canadian bravado I found obnoxious at the end of the day - no substance in that - just personal promotion and ego. Really what does that have to do with dance judging and criticism? Nothing I figure.

Blake saying that Melissa blew the US counterpart Emily out of the water was embarrassing I am sure for Mary sitting there.

Less judging and more spot light on the dancers and choreographers would be my preference.

I immediately wrote to CTV stating my displeasure at the cancellation and the obvious short-sightedness of the network in not promoting Canadian talent. The talent on this show was astonishing and through exposure to the judges and choreographers gave the the dancers a better presence in the industry both in and outside of Canada. Not to mention the fact that having an arts show on Canadian tv that appealed to multiple audiences is something sorely missing. It inspired my little girl to dance......

SYTYCDC ...WHOEVER IS MAKING THE MISTAKEN DECISION TO CANCEL is the one who should be cancelled. SYTYCDC is one of the most interesting, and entertaining programs on tv, period.

I am disapointed that so you think you can dance Canada was cancelled. It was show case for young Canadians' dance talent. I thought that this year was full of so many talented individuals. I was already missing the program and looking forward to next year. I think that it is a big mistake to cancel when it a much needed, entertaining show.

I can't believe it has been cancelled!!! It's almost as if CTV put the finale on 9/11 just to give it lower ratings so they had an excuse to cancel it... The top dancers were stronger than any top dancers in previous Canadian (AND American) seasons of SYTYCD. Unlike other TV shows, the fans of SYTYCDC are die-hard fans, and will watch this show no matter what! Sure, the judges and the host weren't the best, but the dancing was amazing, and that's the real reason why people tuned in.
This is complete bull that this show has been cancelled.

Reality Check

  • Debra Yeo can kind of dance, can’t skate, does a mean karaoke version of “Car Wash” and would never consent to eat rice and sleep on bamboo with strangers on an island for 39 days. When she’s not watching reality TV, she is the Star’s deputy entertainment editor.
