Sold! Beatrice hat tops $128,000
Once upon a time there was an ugly hat.
It was mocked for its ugliness, a visual punchline to so many photoshop treatments that it soon has its own Facebook page. Never mind that it was a hat fit for princess – Beatrice in this case. It was a hat to be laughed at.
When the gavel came down on an eBay auction for the hat on Sunday afternoon, the much maligned chapeau had a top bid of $128,065 (Canadian). All proceeds are going to UNICEF and Children in Crisis.
It was not known immediately who had the winning bid.
This is the story of the ugly hat that became beautiful. And a happily-ever-after ending for the charities.
Inspired by the global reaction that began almost immediately as Princess Beatrice showed up at the royal wedding of her cousin Prince William to Kate Middleton on April 29, it had been decided to put the hat up for auction.
Originally, bidding was to end at noon ET, but a glitch on Saturday suspended the auction for several hours.
The Philip Treacy headpiece, reportedly costing about $1,500, is described on eBay as “a unique sculptural celebratory headpiece in delicate tea rose silk.”
Others have not been so kind, comparing the creation to a toilet seat and a pretzel.
Said Beatrice: “I hope whoever wins the auction has as much fun with the hat as I have.”
Indeed. Wait’ll they see the matching shoes.
