Smart money is on a summer bundle of joy for Will and Kate

Does she know something we don't? The betting is that the William and Kate, seen here on Christmas Day, will be welcoming a new royal in the summer. (Reuters)

If the betting gods are right, Kate and William will have one baby born by natural birth in July 2012 whose name will be Spencer or Frances or John or Diana.

That is, of course, if the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are still married. It’s 100-1 that they will be the first celebrity couple to split in 2012.

Welcome to the world of royal betting, where guesswork is a fine art honed by giants like William Hill  and Ladbrokes.

The gossip rags can spread all the rumours they want -– they only count when someone is willing to lay some cash on the line.

"There is a genuine belief that William and Kate will produce an heir in 2012 and we have not taken a bet on any other year in almost a month,” said Rupert Adams, spokesman for UK betting house William Hill. “We think speculation will reach fever pitch in February and I for one would be very surprised if there is not an announcement in early 2012."

Here’s a rundown of some of the lines now being offered on various royal bets:

-- July is the best month for birthing at 3-1, according to Ladbrokes. June and August are next at 4-1. If you’re a real longshot bettor, try 50-1 in February (good luck). Not surprisingly, it’s even money if it’s a boy or girl.

-- It’s 250-1 that Will and Kate’s baby is born on their April 29 anniversary.

-- William Hill puts odds of 25-1 that Mike Tindall and Zara Phillips will be the first celebrity couple to split in 2012. (Katy Perry-Russell Brand are favoured at 10-11)

-- It’s 5-1 that Pippa Middleton will be voted FHM Sexiest Woman in 2012, or even money that she’ll final win Rear of the Year.

-- John (6-1) and Diana (8-1) are the best name bets for a royal child, according to Hill. Ladbrokes favors Spencer and Frances (10-1). Best longshot: Madonna or Britney at 100-1.

-- Lets not forget Prince Harry. The people at Hill lay odds of 16-1 he’ll tie the knot in 2012 with the general sentiment that it won’t happen for another four years. As for the girl, it’s 25-1 for Pippa.

-- The elder royals aren’t forgotten, either. William Hill reports that it has accepted a 50-pound ($79) wager at 100-1 that the Queen will be helping Prince Philip celebrate his 100th birthday.

Right. They're going to saddle a daughter with the name "Princess Frances".
