On the eve of her 30th birthday, the Duchess of Cambridge seemed quite willing to share the limelight with a horse.

136566643 She was dressed somewhat better, but otherwise the Sunday evening at Odeon Leicester Square in London might have been considered a photo finish.

The occasion was the London premiere of "War Horse," Steven Spielberg's film adaptation of the 1982 children's novel by Michael Morpurgo. Set in rural England and war-torn Europe during World War I, the movie follows the epic journey of a horse through the carnage of the era.

Kate and William walked the the somewhat soggy red carpet in recognition of the premiere benefiting the Foundation of Prince William and Harry, which aids military charity causes. About 600 current and former military personnel were invited, plus their families, for the movie-going evening.

Not to mention Joey, the horse in the film, who was accompanied on the red carpet by Spielberg and Jeremy Irvine, one of the film's stars.

"It's an honour to be here with the royals," said Spielberg. "This is my first royal 136566605premiere  for the Duke and Duchess, having done them before for the Queen and the Queen Mother. ... This is so exciting. I get a buzz. You never grow out of something like this.''

Under the protective umbrella provided by William, Kate wore a floor-length gown, designed by Alice Temperley, covered in black lace with a flower and leaf pattern.

It's fitting that she attend a gathering with a military motif, since it is now being reported that she will soon take up the role as honorary colonel of the Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment. She will also be active in the Forces in Mind Trust, which a charity that helps former military men and women cope who have difficulty coping with civilian life.

"War Horse," which is already up for several best-film awards, comes to the screen on the heels of long, successful runs on Broadway and in London's West End, where it debuted in 2007.

Is there a reason why HRH cannot be a gentleman and hold the umbrella to prevent the rain from dripping on his wife?
