Kate rules Vanity Fair's best dressed list

KateThe Duchess of Cambridge has spent most of the last few weeks looking very casual in Olympic-type garb, but just in case anyone has forgotten her fashion star power, Vanity Fair is here to remind us.

This week, she is featured at the top of the magazine's 2012 international best dressed list with the headline "Kate the Great."

Her impact on style has been undeniable since entering the royal inner circle last year. And it only seems to get more profound, even as she takes a seat in the stands for the Olympics, cheering Team GB.

It's the third time she has made the list (2008 and 2011 previously), which is an eclectic assortment of old and young, society types, media types (Matt Lauer, Morley Safer), actor types (Colin Firth), fashion types (Stella McCartney), music types (Alicia Keys) and even sports types (Tom Brady).

Oh yeah ... royal types too. Aside from Kate, the titled entrants in the VF fold included Princess Alexandra of Greece, Princess Mary of Denmark, Charlotte Casiraghi of Monaco, Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser of Qatar and Prince Heinrich von und zu Furstenberg.

Vanity coverKate's brother-in-law Harry was also a notable inclusion (and William was not). Tipping the balance in Harry's favour must have been his casual style when touring the Caribbean, multi-coloured desert boots and all. He also doesn't look bad in a morning suit. Kate was most notable for her promotion of British designers, shining a hot spotlight on fashion houses like Alexander McQueen, Jenny Packham and Temperley.

How do you get on the list? Good question. Here's a few clues from VF: "Their favorite accessories range from skull necklaces to dogs, their professions from princess to quarterback, and their shopping heavens from Net-a-Porter to haute couture. But, for those wishing to emulate the international cream of 2012’s fashionable crop, two unexpected words: vintage and grandparents!"

Go figure.
