Kate and William caught in a golden embrace at Olympics

If there was any thought that the royals were simply doing their duty by appearing at Olympic venues, they were erased on Th ursday.

PeiThe scene: The Olympic velodrome. This was Kate and William at their enthusiastic best as unbridled boosters of Team Great Britian. The British cyclists were expected to do more than win gold in the team sprint ... world records were to be smashed.

And they were, bringing gold to the team of Philip Hindes, Jason Kenny and Sir Chris Hoy, not to mention sending the crowd of 4,000 into a frenzy. The royals were not immune to the joy.

As the British team hit the jackpot, William implusively grabbed and hugged Kate. That may be an everyday occurrence outside the public eye, but in this very open forum, it is a rare sight indeed. The last time anyone saw this type of public display of affection (ie actually touching one another) may have been when William gave his wife a little squeeze at the end of the dragon boat racing in PEI (right photo).

They had come to the velodrome after a morning at Wimbledon watching tennis. After changing from dress and suit into their casual Team GB gear, they zipped across town -- taking full advantage of the restricted Olympic traffic lanes -- to the veledrome. There, they were joined by Prince Harry (fresh from visiting Canada House) and Prime Minister David Cameron.

We'll let pictures tell the story:
