| Dancers in choreographer's Wen Wei Wang's Unbound employ "three-inch lotus shoes" to simulate bound feet. |
Dancer Jung-Ah Cheung of Wen Wei Dance arrived on crutches for dinner at the home of dance writer Michael Crabb.
It was the end of the run of Unbound at the Premiere Dance Theatre, but she had not danced the last two evenings. In the middle of last Thursday's show, the Vancouver dancer tore something in her knee and left the stage.
The dance employs "three-inch lotus" shoes worn by Peking Opera performers to simulate bound feet. Male dancer Wen Wei Wang and the other four dancers took over Cheung's parts as she was taken to hospital.
Wang, who choreographed the mezmerizing work, was not displeased with Unbound done by five dancers instead of six. "At the end, I dance with a man and we are both wearing the (lotus) shoes."
