The Simón Bolivár Youth Orchestra's visit last week reminded me of how little Latin American music we hear up this way. Rarest of all is sacred music from the Spanish Conquest -- although there is quite a lot of it.
So, here's a sample of sacred vocal music from 17th and early 18th century Latin America, interspersed with instrumental pieces typical of the time, performed last year at Trinity Church, Wall St. in New York City, shown above. That very wealthy church has an incredible music programme, much of it archived on the web. Here, the church choir (most are professional singers) and guest soloists are joined by Rebel Baroque Orchestra led by Eric Milnes.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find a detailed programme, but that didn't stop me from enjoying this fine music.
