The Lalongo mystery and other thoughts from a weekend of TV watching

So just who is this ``Lalongo" guy Don Cherry keeps talking about? Is he any relation to Vancouver goaltender Roberto Luongo? Can't wait until Cherry works a game involving Simeon Varlamov ... Funniest sight of the weekend: NBC microphone jockey Darren Pang interviewing Anaheim's giant defenceman Chris Pronger. There was a 13-inch difference in height, but it looked like a lot more. And, as Pronger pointed out, he wasn't even on skates. ... Speaking of Pang, he might want to cut down on the Red Bull. The guy's hyper style can be more than a little annoying ... I like Toronto FC announcer Nigel Reed's understated style, which comes from his British training. But surely he could raise his voice just one decibel to announce a goal. It's not like they're being scored every minute. ... You could almost hear the sphincters tightening at NHL headquarters Saturday afternoon when the Pittsburgh Penguins pulled goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury in the final minute. Had the Penguins scored and the game gone to overtime, NBC would have announced that it was going to the Kentucky Derby and sending the overtime to Versus. How good would that have looked? Oh, about as good as the fact NBC has no hockey next weekend because of PGA commitments. ... TNT set a cable television ratings record for its Celtics-Bulls playoff series. Saturday's Game 7 on The Score attracted all of 107,000 viewers, which may explain why NBA fans have to play channel roulette to find games.
