TV hockey executive Shannon passes the puck

John Shannon, former head of Hockey Night In Canada and the guy who oversaw the birth of Leafs TV, is leaving the National Hockey League.

Shannon confirmed today that he is stepping down from his post as executive vice-president of production and programming for the NHL.

``The time is right," Shannon said, who joined the NHL in March of 2006. His duties included overseeing regional hockey production in the U.S. ``I'll miss a lot of things about working with the league, but those trips through La Guardia won't be among them."

Shannon said he has no immediate plans.

``I think I'm just going to kick back for a while," he said, noting he hasn't had many vacations the past eight years.

As for the future, Shannon said he doesn't expect to be out of the business very long.

``I have a passion for sports and broadcasting," he said. ``I love radio, so maybe there's something there."

John Shannon can always do the sidekick thing with Bob McCown on Prime Time Sports. In fact, he can be the first ever co-host slash producer, just to make McCown's life a living hell. That would make for great radio.

Maybe Shannon can help Cherry with his "immediately classic" entries........................(barf)

Shannon would be the second host/producer. Ron Maclean is the first.
