FAN morning host choice is Krystal clear
Apparently Andrew Krystal has impressed The FAN 590 so much in his first month on the job, the station has given him a major promotion. Sources say Krystal will become the all-sports station's morning show host after Calgary's Mike Richards turned down the FAN's offer last week.
The move may be temporary, though, with Krystal moving back to the 9-to-noon spot once a permanent host is found for the crucial morning slot. But if Krystal can score solid ratings over the next 12 weeks, he may get the job full-time.

yea, such a NFL city, that they can't get 10,000 paying fans in the dome for NFL games..yet the argos draw 25,000 paying fans each game....
NFL fans are delusional!
head-2-head, CFL doubled NFL ratings this past sunday.
in your face!

Andrew Krystal is a Argo and CFL fan. He has spent a lot of time talking about the CFL on his show, and I love it. I guys like Peter brown can't take the fact that the Argos and the CFL are second highest watched sports team and league in this city, and that is just a fact

Hey. Where's the weekly TV ratings?
Posted by: Rick Grace | 09/18/2010 at 04:17 PM
Agreed with Rick, Chris if you're going to be away or something at least let someone else post the ratings! LIKE COME ON MAN!
Posted by: Brett S | 09/19/2010 at 03:35 PM
NOOOOOO...please no more Krystal!
Posted by: Jerry | 09/21/2010 at 08:10 AM
Where are the TV ratings!!!!! people have money riding on TV ratings don't you know Chris
Posted by: Mike | 09/27/2010 at 06:20 PM
Looks like this blog has been scrapped.
Too bad.
Now without the ratings being published the baseball and basketball and nfl types can go back to making their baseless claims about how huge those sports are in Canada.
And how nobody cares about all Canadian sports.
But we know better, don't we.

TV Ratings PLease
Posted by: TED | 09/28/2010 at 11:49 AM
We sure will, Rick.
Thank heavens you're here to protect us from absurd belief that there are baseball and basketball fans in Toronto. You are truly doing important work here.
Posted by: DLind | 09/28/2010 at 04:12 PM
That;s right Peter Brown never let the facts get in your way of thinking the NFL gets better rating then the CFL in Toronto. The Argos are still the second highest rated sport team on TV in T.O, and that my friend is the Facts
Posted by: BOB | 09/29/2010 at 05:18 PM
And DLind.
They prefer the CFL as well.
Posted by: Rick Grace | 09/29/2010 at 06:44 PM
"The Argos are still the second highest rated sport team on TV in T.O"
That statement is often repeated by a few and yet never backed up by any evidence. Wonder why?
Posted by: Mike | 09/30/2010 at 04:15 PM
Just backed up by the TV numbers that all
Posted by: BOB | 10/01/2010 at 05:03 PM
"Just backed up by the TV numbers that all"
Um, not here they are, all of these are national numbers. One person just said it without providing a link or a source. When asked about it he disappeared.
Only once have Toronto numbers been posted by Chris and it was about the Super Bowl and Grey Cup.
"The only down side to the numbers was what happened in the Toronto-Hamilton region. The Super Bowl drew an average of 2 million viewers there. The Grey Cup audience in that coveted region was 900,000."

You just made the guys point. The Jays, raptors don't come close to that number 900,000 in the GTA. Common sence will tell you in a region of 6 to 7 million in and around the GTA and the Argo's get close to Million viewers, that a good portion has to come from the GTA. You don't have to be a mathematician to figure that out. I agree that some of the people on this form overestimate the numbers for the Argo's, but there are others who simply won't accept that the Argo's and the CFL draw very will on TV.

How come you never ask where the Jays or Raptors viewers come from, only the Argos, but your not bias against the CFL, OHH No, not you
Posted by: Jen | 10/02/2010 at 05:15 PM
"How come you never ask where the Jays or Raptors viewers come from"
Well that would be because no one has said that the Jays draw X number in Toronto directly yet. When someone does, I'd expect the same proof given.
"You just made the guys point."
The Argos played in the Grey Cup last year? And that game had over 5,000,000 viewers total on TSN. That's a little bit more than your average regular season CFL game.
"but your not bias against the CFL"
How is it bias to ask some questions to blanketed statements? I guess I should be like Rick/Joe/whoever: No one likes baseball, no one likes basketball, the Toronto media hates Canada, hockey doesn't get enough recognition and gets picked on etc. etc.
Posted by: Mike | 10/02/2010 at 06:18 PM
Mike's right. I really don't read anyone here saying that the CFL doesn't draw well on TV. It's blatantly obvious that it does. And I really don't think anyone begrudges that. But some commenters (perhaps just Rick) seem completely unable to acknowledge strong rating for the Jays and the NFL. I think that's the source of most of the arguing on this board. And really, it's kind of made it unreadable in some ways. Who really cares what is the most popular? NHL, NBA, MLB, NFL and CFL all clearly have the places in the sports market here. Why bicker?
Posted by: DLind | 10/02/2010 at 06:57 PM
All, that was said, was the the CFL and the Argos get great TV numbers, you are the one that can't take that statement, (which is fact) without finding some diabolical plot by CFL fans that they are trying to take over the world. Wait till the TV numbers come out for the Sask/Argo game today, should be close if not over a million, and yes a higher percentage of thoses viewers will be from Saskatchewan , but again you can't consistently draw these high ratings without a good portion of people from the GTA watching the game

You people so completely misconstrue what I say that I wonder how old you are? What a waste of time this is.
Posted by: Rick Grace | 10/03/2010 at 12:09 AM
Jen, maybe you missed the posts from before. People have claimed that inside Toronto/Hamilton, the Argos are the second most-watched team and someone else said that the Labour Day game drew 405,000 from that same area. Those are more specific than just saying the Argos get great numbers, which I never disputed. I choose not to just accept a statement like that when nothing else is provided considering that there are some people (but by no means all) who already do misrepresent many things such as the NFL numbers being an inclusive total.
And I agree, should the game yesterday get over 1,000,000 I would guess that many of those are from Saskatchewan seeing as how the largest Argos draw so far this year was the Labour Day game at 879,000 total and 4 other games drew in the 650,000 range. On the otherhand, the Roughriders have already had 5 1,000,000 plus games this year with one more just missing at 992k.
"You people so completely misconstrue what I say that I wonder how old you are?"
I personally find this statement hilarious.

WHY NO UPDATES IN 3 WEEKS????????????
IF THE BLOG IS DEAD,AT LEAST SAY SO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BLOGGER'S REPLY: Apologies for this, but I guess I had been hoping The Star would change its mind. The sports media column and blog have been terminated by The Star as the sports section changes its focus. To all those who read it regularly, or just dropped in from time to time, I thank you.

Mike.
You say you have nothing against the CFL.
Yet you fight like hell to prove nobody in Tranna watches the CFL?
Like gimme a break.
Bottom line
The Argos TV numbers are bigger than the Blue Jays.
And bury the Raptors and TFC.
What you spout is your own viewpoint.
With no basis in fact.

Wow, the comments have really got a long ways away from the original blog topic - the new morning man at Fan590. As it applies to ratings however, here's my take on that - now that the Jays are done I've stopped listening to the muck that passes for sports information on the Fan except for McCowan and because he is earlier I can't listen as much. It'll be interesting to see how Rogers entities do in the ratings what with the slop at the Fan these days and the movement of the Jays last 20 or so games to SN1 (wherever that can be found).
Maybe that's why no numbers are available or maybe Zelko is spending so much time on the ever popular(?) Argos beat.

As the sports section changes focus? What, to more wall-to-wall Leafs coverage? A sad day, Mr Zelkovich. I've enjoyed your columns and blogs very much. With William Houston (truthandrumours.net) also taking a holiday, is there anyone in Canada writing about sports media, specifically the nuts and bolts of TV broadcasting? Certainly not Bruce Dowbiggin at the Globe, who prefers human interest puff pieces in his column.
