What not to watch this weekend
It's not looking good for Cop Out. Too bad. I like Kevin Smith. But after reading Peter Howell's review ("Cop Out isn't so much a movie as it is a cinematic suicide note for Kevin Smith's directing career. After word gets out about how badly he has bungled this routine assignment, he'll be lucky to get gigs shooting Flipcam videos at children's birthday parties") and seeing that the movie is currently at a grim 17 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, I think I'll wait until it's on the movie channel so I can watch in the comfort of my own intoxication.
Here are some choice reviewer quotes:
"[An] utterly incompetent, painfully unfunny, ploddingly dull waste of time, money and life.
"A pathetic action-comedy from a guy who can't film action, featuring stars who have the chemistry of Play-Doh and a rock."
"Cop Out wouldn't be as disappointing if it hadn't been made by Smith, but for those who dig the vulgar wit of his early, funny films, it's not just stupid, it's sad."
"It's like Beverly Hills Cop meets Die Hard, except we liked those movies."
"Smith’s staging, composition, editing and humor mark him as utterly incompetent."
"Between the scat, snot and drool references, it seems that the targeted audience is an 8-year-old boy named Timmy."
"I'm convinced that Mr. Smith has the ability to create humorous sketches and slap them together... But he doesn't seem to yet grasp how to structure, pace and edit a continuous, rational narrative."
"A soulless, witless, landfill contraption that Smith once would have mocked mercilessly."

I'm going to be a "Cop Out" dropout.
