Price of movie popcorn causes lawsuit

Yes, the prices we pay at the movie theatre concession stands are perhaps a bit steep. But there are time-tested ways to get around this problem: 1) Wear a hat filled with Twizzlers. 2) Stuff your bra with popcorn. 3) Rootbeer underwear. 4) Somehow manage to get through two hours of your day without chewing.

But for one Michigan man those options were obviously just a bit too easy and obvious and now he's suing AMC for charging too much for popcorn.

The L.A. Times has this: "A Michigan man says the price of movie theater popcorn is ridiculously high. Same goes for the sodas and candies sold by movie concessionaires. So Joshua Thompson is taking the issue to a higher authority: He's filed a class-action lawsuit to end what he says is price gouging. Thompson, an avid moviegoer from Livonia, Mich., used to bypass the high prices charged for theater popcorn, soda and candy by bringing in his own treats, said his attorney, Kerry Morgan. But Thompson arrived at his local theater outside Detroit recently to find a new sign telling customers they were no longer allowed to bring in their own goodies. "He called me and said, 'Can they do that?' " Morgan told The Times. The attorney said his first reaction was, "Sure, they can do that, it's private property." But then he began doing a little legal research and came across the Michigan Consumer Protection Act, a statute designed to prevent price gouging. And a lawsuit was born. The suit, which seeks refunds in a class action on behalf of moviegoers who were overcharged, was filed last week in Wayne County Circuit Court against AMC Theatres. A spokesman for AMC told The Times that he could not comment on pending litigation. While the lawsuit addresses alleged price gouging only in Michigan, you can bet that it will probably  trigger copycat lawsuits elsewhere if successful. But don't hold your breath. Some legal experts told the Detroit Free Press that businesses that are already regulated, like movie theaters, are exempt form the state's price-gouging statute."

Exactly! Because sometimes you want a cupcake at 3am. And, unless someone gave you cupcakes the day before, you might as well just start crying. Of course, you have to live in L.A. to enjoy this exciting new innovation, but still ... just knowing it's out there. The company that operates it is called Sprinkles and, according to LAist, they say:

I've never heard of Hot in the Kitchen before but it appears to be a series of videos about food and breasts by a woman named Jaz, who makes the worst sandwiches ever. But, while the idea of Wonder Woman wasting her time making sandwiches is obnoxious and idiotic, I'm also worried about the lack of a hair-net. Being a super-hero-demeaning sandwich maker is no excuse for bad kitchen practices.

Which pig looks yummiest?

I bet you don't think about the individual pig responsible for that delicious bacon. A German website aims to change that. The Telegraph has this:

"German meat lovers can now buy packs of sausages with pictures of the pig that went into the sausage as part of an initiative aimed at changing the way people think of animals. Consumers can even go to a website to look at pictures of the pigs, read the latest news on each sow and then vote for the animal they want to eat. The winner gets converted into sausages and other meat products. "I think man has lost touch with his food," said Dennis Buchman, the creator of the Meine Kleine Farm My Little Farm in English initiative. "People eat a sausage like a carrot; without any thought about what goes into it." Mr Buchman selects the pigs from a free-range farm near Berlin, photographs them and then places the pictures online with descriptions of the animals ... But far from putting people off sausages by prompting feelings of affection for the animal and guilt over its demise, the idea has hit a chord with at least some consumers. Pigs "four" and "five", due to be butchered next month, are already sold out, and My Little Farm has 800 Facebook fans. Bernd Schulz, the farmer involved, gave the initiative his enthusiastic backing. "We have to face up to the fact that we descended from hunter-gathers," he said. "But we must also show respect and reverence for the animals, and think about those that die for us."

I'm not sure that this half-naked swimsuit model writhing about in a car with melted cheese in her hand makes me want to buy a burger. Yes, I know I'm not a member of the target audience and that, as a woman, my opinion matters none, but I will still say that it all just seems terribly unhygienic. One does not put one's hand where she's putting her hand if one's just been holding a discount burger. It's rule number 72.
