It’s a good thing the Morison family home in Burketon, near Oshawa, is a long way from their nearest neighbour.
That’s because there was a whole lot of hooting and hollering going on at around 2:30 a.m. as they watched Matt Morison capture a bronze medal behind gold medal-winning teammate Jasey Jay Anderson at the World Snowboard Championships in Gangwon, Korea. The event was streamed live on cbc.ca.
“We all stayed up, we were on the edge of our seats,” said Cathy Morison, Matt’s mom. “You feel kind of sick watching, you want your kid to do well and want the best for them. It’s unbelievable how far he’s come so fast.”
The skiers will race again today in the parallel slalom, which is not an Olympic discipline.
Hudec Sitting This One Out: Downhiller Jan Hudec pulled off a tremendous eighth-place finish last weekend in Wengen, Switzerland, in his return to the course where his season ended the year before when he tore up his knee. But he will sit out this week’s Hahnenkamm downhill in Kitzbuehel, Austria, even though it looks like snow will make the treacherous layout easier. It’s a wise move. No sense trying to be a hero now with the 2010 Winter Games on the horizon.
