Lopes-Schliep On The Verge Of Something Big

MICHAEL SOHN/AP
Priscilla Lopes-Schliep could do something very special today.

(Note: This is the link to get the live CBC fed)

Everything seems to point to Priscilla Lopes-Schliep breaking out with a big win in the women’s 100-metre hurdles at the world track and field championships in Berlin today.

The Whitby, Ont., native has looked incredibly sharp of late, winning the last big race in Stockholm before the championships with all the competitors there. It was an event where there was two heats on the same day, which is the scenario today in Berlin with the semis at 12:45 p.m. EST and then the finals at 3:15 pm.

You can watch it all on live streaming at cbc.ca (Ain’t technology a wonderful thing!) and also get informed through the Athletics Canada website.

The thing that makes you think this is Lopes-Schliep’s time is the ease with which she’s performing at the moment. She talked last week about workouts that are supposed to be hard seeming much easier these days. She's in that proverbial "zone." She clocked the fastest time in the first round yesterday (12.56 seconds) and seemed to have a lot left in the tank.

Perdita Felicien’s Canadian record of 12.46 seconds, set in the summer of 2004, looks certain to fall. Lopes-Schliep indicated as much in a Twitter message earlier today. The thinking here is a gold for Lopes-Schliep and a well-earned bronze for Felicien.

But as these athletes themselves keep saying, it’s hurdles and anything can happen.

Stay tuned. We'll keep you updated on this blog.

Also Worth Keeping An Eye On: After leaving it dormant for a long time, Felicien has been doing a great job on her blog the past few months so you might find something interesting there.

As well, Flotrack.org is good at getting interviews with Canadians up on the site. Here’s a good one with Perdita after the first round yesterday:

These two ladies are doing Canada proud - go Priscilla, go Perdita!

Apparently Priscilla just won the silver in the 100 metre hurdles.
