Good city councillors take care of their back yards
One of the tricks to staying elected is to jump when a constituent has a complaint, which some city councillors are better at than others.
Count Mike Del Grande (Ward 39, Scarborough Agincourt) and his assistant, Lionel Tao, among them.
Many people wouldn’t think to call their councillor to report a city-related problem. It’s easier to call 311, or even me, as a lot of people do on SeeClickFix.
But when they do, smart councillors make sure the complaint is acknowledged quickly and resolved ASAP. Word eventually gets around that the councillor is good at calling back and getting things fixed.
And in rare, wonderful instances, someone who works for the councillor goes looking for things they should know about in their ward.
I was surfing SeeClickFix the other day and found a report and photo from someone named Fruvous about a section of sidewalk on Warden Ave., south of Steeles Ave., that floods when it rains, which seems like every other day.
Tao responded to the complaint the same day it was filed, which I have seldom seen on SeeClickFix, with the following reply: “Thank you very much for bringing this issue to our attention. I’ve submitted a request to our transportation services division for inspection and repair, and have attached your photo.”
He also provided a phone number and email address to get in touch with him.
The next day, Tao entered an update on SeeClickFix: “I’vejust spoken to the area inspector. He’s gone out to take a look and has confirmed that 21 sidewalk bays are submerged (14 on one side and seven on the other). His assessment is that the problem is caused primarily by the boulevard grass being too high and not allowing for drainage. For the time being he has attempted to dig a bit of a channel for the water in the boulevard and left some traffic cones. He has submitted the item for permanent repair, most likely by introducing a draining swale on the boulevard to alleviate future flooding.”
Obviously, Tao doesn’t wait around for people to call. He goes surfing on SeeClickFix for problems in his ward and rolls up his sleeves.
How’s that for service?
