So the mayor had a few beers, eh? Big deal
Boy, Rob Ford has really stepped in it this time, having a few beers at the Taste of the Danforth festival Friday night.
Debasing himself yet again by consuming alcoholic beverages while mingling at the huge street party, and then kidding around with citizens and making small talk.
Has Ford no shame?
That was the tone of the criticism directed at the mayor on Twitter, after someone posted video on YouTube in which he appeared to be quite refreshed and having a really good time.
I watched the video and cannot say that I am aflame with outrage. Ford was surrounded by people who wanted to talk to him, and the mayor was pleased to oblige. That’s public outreach at its finest.
Ford has often demonstrated that he is a man of the people, with a taste for the same things the rest of us enjoy, including a few beers at an event where just about everyone is having a drink.
A couple months ago we were talking about Ford and crack, and that was a pretty good story.
Now everyone’s hollering because the video shows a guy who had a few beers, and maybe more.
But any objective observer can see that he was far from plastered. I didn’t observe anything that made me think less of him.
Ford likes to get a buzz. We all know that. Big deal.
And no matter how big the story – or small, in this case – there are a lot of people out there who like the idea that their mayor is not above partying with them and getting a bit pissy.
When Former Alberta Premier Ralph Klein was mayor of Calgary, he was well known for knocking back a lot more than a few beers at rough-edged downtown watering holes. Everybody loved him for it.
I like a mayor who is able to keep the common touch and not be burdened by the stuffy confines of office. I’d have a beer with him any time.
