Mushroom magic

Whether it is deliberate -- and we suspect some guerilla gardening is at work -- or the soil and sun have aligned, this magical mushroom garden on the west side of Yonge St., north of Queen's Quay, has been attracting attention from passersby for a couple of weeks.

It's a new take on an otherwise ubiquitous planter outside a condo tower. Last year, a couple of lone tomato plants were producing fruit in the early fall in the same bed.

The 'shrooms are so much more interesting than the typical white bedding plants in attracting the eye to an otherwise shady bed. They also look like they belong perfectly among the hostas, impatience and begonias.

Google, that channel of everything weird and wonderful in the world, failed to turn up any information on whether decorative mushroom gardening is a new trend with the green thumb set this season.
