A Slowwwwww Start

There's hope for more, but so far. . .

Let's just say the start to trade deadline day hasn't exactly been promising, at least not it you're hoping for something akin to the past two years when more than 20 trades have been consumated on the final day of NHL dealing.

So far today there's just been one, defenceman Derek Morris from Boston back to Phoenix for a fourth round pick. Well two, with the Leafs about to confirm a deal that will send Martin Skoula, the player acquired along with Luca Caputi in the Pittsburgh deal for Alexei Ponikarovsky, to New Jersey.

Maybe the big moves - Ilya Kovalchuk, Dion Phaneuf - have already been made. Then again, if previous years are a guide, things could pick up after noon in the final hours to the 3 p.m. deadline.

The Spin on Sports by Damien Cox
