Bono and the Edge arrive to screaming TIFF fans

To screams and hoots Bono, The Edge and Director Davis Guggenheim have arrived at the debut of their movie and are inside. Two slow moving SUVs rolled up surrounded by wild fans. The pair took about five minutes to enter the building after chatting with the crowd and signing autographs. Mary Chaise from Hamilton who got a look at the pair said the wait was wort it. "They're just incredible," she said.

The Insider for Sept.14

It’s all hail The Boss as Bruce Springsteen hits Roy Thomson Hall at 8:15 p.m. for a rare red carpet appearance on behalf of The Promise: The Making of Darkness On the Edge of Town.

The doc captures Springsteen with his E Street Band during the recording of their pivotal 1978 album. Extensive, never-before-seen footage of home rehearsals and recording sessions are combined with new interviews for an unprecedented close-up of the everyman rocker.

Also on the manly man tip, Ryan Reynolds makes the scene at Ryerson Theatre at 8:15 p.m for Buried. Star critic Peter Howell dubbed the claustrophobic thriller which stars Vancouver-born Reynolds as a U.S. trucker in Iraq whose convoy is ambushed by insurgents a “pulse racer.” The protagonist awakes to find himself beneath the desert in a wooden box planted six feet under, with oxygen running out and sand pouring in.

Yikes!

Speaking of pulse racer - Keanu Reeves is slated to walk the fan plank at 8:15 p.m. at Elgin/Winter Garden Theatre for Henry’s Crime. The romantic comedy which also stars Vera Farmiga, James Caan and Judy Greer finds Reeves playing a toll booth operator who trades his humdrum life for a new career in armed robbery. The afterparty for the film and whatever kind of facial hair Reeves is currently sporting is at Brassaii.

The big I’ll-sell-my-grandmother-for-a-ticket shindig tonight is the InStyle soirée at The Windsor Arms Hotel.

Full slate of galas for Sunday

NBA scoring wiz and proud Canuck Steve Nash is expected on the red carpet at the Isabel Bader theatre at 2:45 p.m. for the premiere of Into the Wind, the doc the Phoenix Suns point guard co-directed the doc about cancer research activist Terry Fox.

Hollywood heavyweights Dustin Hoffman, Paul Giamatti and Minnie Driver strut their stuff at 5:15 p.m. at Roy Thomson Hall for the gala of Barney’s Version – adapted from 1997 novel of late Montreal scribe Mordecai Richler. The invite-only afterparty takes place at the ET Canada Lounge on the parking garage rooftop across from the Hazelton Hotel.

And Star reporter Bruce Demara says Small Town Murder Songs which premiers at 7 p.m. at AMC 6 is a must-see given writer/director Ed Gass-Donnelly’s “fresh take on crime and redemption.” The tale, set in southwestern Ontario Old Order Mennonite country, centres on a police chief with a violent past struggling to bring a killer to justice while seeking reconciliation with his aged father and his own troubled psyche.

If American content is in order, a trio actor-directors should suffice:

Director/star Philip Seymour Hoffman, attends the Jack Goes Boating debut at 12:15 p.m. with actors Amy Ryan, Daphne Rubin-Vega and John Ortiz in tow.

Woody Allen is expected at the Elgin at 5:15 p.m. with the cast of You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger - Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins and Freida Pinto.

And everybody’s favourite outlaw Clint Eastwood graces the Elgin at 8:15 for Hereafter, along with Matt Damon and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Phoning it in, punching a clock, spreading margarine instead of butter, no matter how you say it, the sentiment is the same - Robert DeNiro has not been delivering on his reputation.

Meet the Fockers, Analyze That, Everybody’s Fine…c’mon, this dude’s supposed to be one of the greats.

Well, Star movie dean Peter Howell says Bobby D is back to form in Stone which premieres Friday at 9 p.m. at Elgin Theatre. “He's completely engaged in John Curran's drama, playing a parole officer whose personal foibles are about to haunt him,” Howell said.

Thank goodness, because co-star Edward Norton, who plays a cunning arsonist, replete with tats and cornrows, is no slouch and apparently the fetching Milla Jovovich, playing wife to Norton’s character, is an impressive foil to the fellas. The film also screens on Sept. 11, 2:30 p.m., Varsity Theatre and Sept. 18, 6 p.m., Ryerson Theatre.

Also hitting the red carpet today: father-son acting duo, Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez at 2:45 p.m. for The Way premiere at Winter Garden. Estevez also directed the film about a literal journey that yields self-discovery.

It’s a Biutiful night, says party patroller Rita Zekas. A private soiree for Spanish director Pedro Almodovar, a close pal of newlywed actors Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz, is being held at Bistro 990 early enough for all to decamp to the after-party for Bardem's film Biutiful at Soho House Lounge.

And if you are an FOB, friend of Bill Gates – he’s in town to support education doc Waiting for Superman - you can talk technology over drinks at his invite-only bash at Ciao.

Culture vultures will want to flock to Toro Lounge for Caitlin Cronenberg's photo exhibit.

'Score' stars arrive for opening Gala

About 500 film fans braved the fall chill to watch the stars of Score: A Hockey Musical arrive at Roy Thomson Hall for the movie's TIFF-opening Gala.

The biggest cheers were for Olivia Newton John, who wore a glamorous gold gown with leopard print shell to ward off the unseasonably cool weather.

The fans also welcomed Nelly Furtado who wore sexy, sky-high patent leather stilettos and a black and white cocktail-length dress.

Besides the cast and crew of the movie, hockey luminaries Walter Gretzky and Theo Fleury were also on the red carpet.

In contrast to the fleet of black Caddie Escalades that ferried the A-listers to the start of the red carpet in Metro Hall Square was a Beck Taxi. It pulled in between the flashy Cadillacs and two unidentified passengers hopped out and walked down the red carpet.
