Any chance of seeing De Ro with TFC? Seems logical given that he is a high-caliber player from Toronto.

De Ro signed a contract extension with Houston earlier this season, so I don't like his chances of coming here any time soon. Johnston would have to give up a LOT to trade for him, and for right now I don't think he's willing to do that. HOWEVER, De Rosario has said more than once that he would love to finish his career in Toronto, so once this current contract expires, it's possible...

both are MLSE teams, TFC and the Leafs. however, the first is good value for money in terms of entertainment, and the other good money down the drain. hope the accountants at the Teacher's Pension Plan can get to the bottom of it.

I´m from Brazil and I saw Mo Johnston at Botafogo Club in Rio de Janeiro last week in flesh and bone. If he is going after good players there, it is better to advice him that Botafogo had good soccerers in late 60´s (the legendary Garrincha was one). Today Botafogo is just a medium force team with a great past. Ok..ok.. the present Botafogo team has Dodo - a great streaker but that was caught on doping test - and Carlos Aberto - a problematic middle-fielder. But besides those two players, I cannot see what Mo Johnston wants from Botafogo.
Please, somebody can warning him about it? And tell him to go to Palmeiras, Flamengo, Corinthians and Sao Paulo clubs and there he can see some good players with affordable cost.

TFC don't need to acquire a high calibre striker to be successful next season. Their skill is adequate, yet they displayed phenomenal feats at times as well. They are no different than the vast majority of MLS teams in terms of skill. The TFC should attempt to do as any good expansion team should, and that is keep as much of the original squad together as possible and develop chemistry, as this is what truly enables a team to be successful. As long as they have enough depth to avoid injury troubles, in a year or two they will have gradually risen to the top as their team chemistry improved. Take the Minnesota Wild for example, they kept their original squad, nobody saw them as a threat, yet in a few years they made a good run in the playoffs, including putting out Patrik Roy and the Avalanche.

Bit of a typo in your article. Houston won 15 regular season games, not 11.

I agree on a DP not being the answer to all our problems. Plenty of teams in MLS have used that extra cap space to spread out over the roster and it has worked fine.

No typo, Alex. I wrote the original post before the 2007 playoffs. Houston's win total in 2006 was...

11

But yeah if I was a fan I'd rather see three or four guys in their prime at $200K helping the team win than one over-the-hill superstar pulling in a few million but not getting my team points.

It will be an interesting offseason....
