At Soccer City: Big cat sighting

JOHANNESBURG

Today's security checkpoint story, at Soccer City: The bag goes into the scanner. The coat, with cellphone inside, is passed to a security guard. "Okay, c'mon through," he says. The alarm goes off as I pass through the archway.

"What have you got in your pockets?" he asks.

"Nothing - it's all in my jacket. Maybe the lanyard?"

"No, no, can't be that."

He looks at me. Beat.

"Okay, you can go on through."

Okay, so it wasn't that big a cat. Wasn't big at all, really.
