It begins -- Contact 2010
Contact doesn't officially start until Saturday, but that doesn't mean there isn't a glut of openings related to it tonight. In keeping with last year's practice, I'll run a photo here every day, from a different exhibition (not sure if the paper will do the same this year or not; last year we got lucky). You have to start somewhere, so let's start with tonight's opening of the Sanchez Brothers at Nicholas Metivier:
The work of Montreal-based Carlos & Jason Sanchez has gotten a lot of air in recent years, with their fascination with death and the macabre -- often taken to over-the-top, noirish extremes -- winning them all sorts of international acclaim. In a departure from recent practice, here they show a suite of bloodless images whose grisly reality is culled from history, not their own imagination; above, a gas chamber from a Nazi death camp, which takes their grim fascination to a disturbing new scale.
