Sobey long, long, long list announced.
Busy week. Late again, due to my absence (I'm getting tired of saying that), the Sobey long list was announced, too, with a lot of familiar names -- not just because they're well-known Canadian artists, but because they've been nominated before. Which is a little odd, given this is a mid-career achievement thing; maybe if it was more geared towards an exhibition record of the past year -- you know, like the Oscars -- repeats would make sense. No disrespect to any of the repeat offenders, who all deserve the $50,000 purse some time in their careers; but getting multiple cracks on the same credentials hurts the award's credibility, in my opinion.
I'm a huge fan of the Sobey and the amazing work it does raising the profile of young Canadian artists, and would hate to see it tarnished in that -- or any other -- way. Maybe there's a simple solution: Smaller lists. Anyway, not this year. Here's the long version, with the short to be released June 15, with the winner announced in Montreal in November.
