Chop up those bananas

The list of items banned from the Republican National Convention security perimeter includes all of the obvious (weapons, explosives, poles, laser pointers, pepper spray) and many of the debatable (signs, strollers, umbrellas, unopened envelopes). It also includes "whole fruit." According to the National Journal, a reporter was forced to surrender a banana. Wrote someone on the libertarian website DailyPaul.com: "Topic for RNC Rules Committee: are (rotten) tomatoes a fruit or a vegetable?"

What kind of a Republican Convention is this where a free citizen is not allowed to bring in their legally owned gun? I mean I'm not searched when I go to the movies, and what's going to happen if somebody needs a gun for self-protection?
